I want a semi- inexpensive shotgun and want it to be able to do alot of things. I want about an 18 inch barrel 12 guage; right now im thinking about a mossberg 500 type or remington 870 seven shot folding stock with speed bead. I'll use it for mainly defense and shooting clays; maybe hunting if i need it.

With shooting clays and hunting you are probably better off sticking with a full stock. Plus it will work just as good as an HDSG.

18 inches... for clays? Get a regular, standard format 870 or 500. The barrel will be 24-28 inches. Get an extra barrel for HD. You can put the long barrel (the one the gun comes with) on when you go shoot clays. A full stock is fine for HD. That buttstock is good for smackin' somebody on the noggin.

I think you'll be good with either the 870 or 500 but I agree with the posts above git the 24-28" barrel. You can always get a spare :)

You really should do a side by side comparison for yourself. Then decide. There are factors that only you can decide on. Such as the safety's location, which is very different between the 500 and 870.
How the gun fits to your body, ease of use and so on.

It's really the only way to go if your serious about finding what is right for you.

I got a 20" vent rib barrel on my 500 12ga. and use it for everything. Shootin clays, hunting birds/hogs/deer, shootin steel plates, and it's a short enough platform for HD

Well, there are a few things to think about. One is there is a lot more farkleland stuff for the Remmy, but almost as much for the Mossy. The Remmy has more of a following if you want to sell it and up-grade or just make a change. I feel the Remmy has a beter resale value. I had a mossy 500AST combo, tactical and bird barrels, sold it and bought a 870 and will allways now have a 870. Just sold my H&K M1 Super 90, but keeping the 870.

I have only had the 870 for a little while but have fun farkleing it up.

You can always buy a bird barrel and plug if you want to hunt with either so there's that.

Other

I'd get an 870 because I prefer the steel receiver and I'd get a full stock.

My HD gun is an 870 WM Magnum with a 20" rifle sight smooth bore slug barrel, no mag extension; I removed my mag tube extension because it screwed up the balance. I use a different 870 for clay games, barrels include both a 26" and 30" Rem Choke tubes. For clays I use Briley extended chokes.

I voted other because I think it would be cheaper and more to your liking to do what I do. I have a Rem. 870 combe I have a 28" barrel for clays and all of the other fun stuff and a smoothbore slug barrel for home defense perfect for 00buck. Or you could buy one of those old fixed choke barrels for about $50.00 and cut it down to about 18" and do it even cheaper.
