I'm thinking of selling a rifle to a guy in Anne Arundle County, MD...

The gun is a Bushmaster 16" Superlight produced a couple years ago during the ban. It has a fixed collapsible stock, no bayonet lug, and a bare muzzle. (It is 1994-04 AWB compliant).

Does MD have an AWB or any other laws that would keep me from being able to sell this rifle there?
 
From what I understand, it is legal to own an assult style weapon in any configuration but must go through an FFL. There is a seven day waiting period since it is an assult weapon. Also, no magazines over twenty rounds can be purchased in MD. They are legal to own. I can go to Delaware, 10 minutes drive for me, and purchase all the thirty rounders I want and bring them back to MD. Disclaimer: I'm not an authority so you might want to double check.
There is MD Ar-15 Shooter site that explains the law. Can't remember the address right now.
 
What is the definition of assault weapon in Maryland?

I guess I should know, as this gun has never been in a configuration that would make it an "assault weapon" according to the 94 federal law.
 
Now you see if that AR had a heavy barrel it would not be an assault weapon but because you have the dreaded extra evil, super velocity, concealable, light weight, super accurate, death dealing, light barrel on it than it threrefore is much much more deadly than your run of the mill heavy barrel AR15. Makes perfect sense really. :rolleyes: :scrutiny:

Yep you'll have to transfer it to an FFL in the area and then the buyer will still have to fill out the necessary paperwork and then wait the 7 day minimum. If you need a list of FFLs in the area let us know.
 
Agreed.

I'm an Anne Arundel County resident myself. What everybody else replied pretty much nails it. You can sell the rifle with no problems, just don't send ANY mags with a capacity higher than 20 rounds.


PM me the name of the guy; there's a pretty tight group of shooters in the county....maybe one of us knows him.
 
The buyer is a member of a non-firearms related forum I frequent, and I don't know his name, yet. He already has a local FFL in mind... he made it sound like the place had an indoor range; maybe someone knows which one it would be. If/when his check and FFL arrives, I will post the name of the place. I'm going to include the factory 10 round Clinton mag and thats it.
 
Good gosh....if they have an indoor range that pretty much narrows it down to On Target or Select Fire. On Target is $100 to transfer and Select Fire is....well, Select Fire.....we'll leave it at that.

Maybe I'll tell him it would be worth the drive to head somewhere else.

I've never seen a straight transfer cost more than $25 around here.
 
Well it is a great gun, no doubt. I just finished my LMT build and have too many ARs at the moment, if thats possible. I decided to sell one of them to help finance a new project and offered up the superlight and 20" HBAR. I would have rather seen the 20" go to tell you the truth, but such is life. Also I'm wondering how much longer decent resale on ban configuration guns is going to hold up. I'm taking about a $300 loss from when I bought it NIB, but I sort of intentionally overpaid by about $100. Plus, just like a car... I never believe a sale like this is complete until the check is in hand. :D So we'll see what happens.

I'd love to have one in no-ban configuration one day.

There is some misunderstanding here. It is up to the buyer to find a MD dealer, not you. The buyer needs to have the dealer send you a signed copy of his FFL. Until you have that, don't ship the gun. And enclose a copy of the signed FFL with the gun and have the original with you when you ship the gun to prove it is going to an FFL dealer. The gun can be shipped as an ordinary rifle and can go USPS; no need to bother with UPS or FedEx.

Except for convenience to the buyer, you don't need to ship the gun to an AA county dealer, it can come to any MD-licensed regulated firearms dealer. There are some in Frederick County who would handle the transfer for a third of that, except that is quite a long haul from AA Co.
