TELL THE SENATE TO PASS AN EFFECTIVE ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN

SIMPLE RENEWAL IS NOT ENOUGH!

On Tuesday, March 2, at 11:30, the U.S. Senate will vote on an amendment to simply extend the current assault weapons ban for 10 years. The proposal will be offered to a bill that would limit the civil liability of gun manufacturers and dealers.

Please call your Senator and tell them that current law must not only be renewed, but strengthened in order to work to ban all assault weapons. The gun industry has eviscerated the current ban with post-ban assault weapons--AK-47s, UZIs, AR-15s, MAC-10s, and others--that are virtually identical to the guns banned in 1994. Just such a gun--a post-ban AR-15 clone manufactured by Bushmaster--was used by the Washington, DC-area snipers to kill 10 and wound three.

VPC staff have just returned from the big gun industry trade show (the SHOT Show) where there were endless displays of new, post-ban assault weapons. Simple renewal of current law will leave these assault weapons on the market.

PLEASE TELL YOUR SENATORS THAT SIMPLE RENEWAL OF EXISTING LAW IS NOT GOOD ENOUGH. URGE YOUR SENATORS TO INSIST ON A STRENGTHENED ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN THAT WORKS TO BAN ALL ASSAULT WEAPONS.

There's the phone number and the info. Just change a few words and call your congress critters to point out that Senator Kennedy's Amendment is ridiculous and would ban all weapons capable of humanely hunting any large game in the United States.

This is b.s. The Violence Puberty Center knows that there is no or little chance that they will get a stronger AWB passed. But this suggestion makes sense politically. By pushing for a stronger bill, it allows weak-kneed politicians to "compromise" back to the original 10-more-years bill and then claim they didn't give in to a radical agenda. This is predictable crap and the expected move from these people.
