I am wondering if anyone uses IMR 4756 and what a good load is for .357 mag. I have a good load with Unique but unfortunately my supply is drying up and can't find any anywhere. I was able to get my hands on some IMR 4756 since I read it is comparable to Unique performance. If you have used it and have a good load then I would be very grateful in you sharing. BTW I'd be using 158gr LSWC. Thanks!

I have used the powder extensively on 357 Magnum Lite, i.e. 357 cases and 38 Special performance. I have to push it to 7.0 grs to clean it up about 90%, else I get unburned powder. I have gone to magnum primers also, again trying to get more complete ignition.

Reportedly, this powder is going to go away. I have planned to go to AA#7, assuming I can get more than the one pound I have now. W231 was too soft a load, and others would work to a point too, no doubt.

What I was looking for in finding SR4756 was a powder than ran at lead velocities but filled cases enough to see powder when loading. Thus I was looking at VMD and charge weights to calculate CCs of case fill.

Actually, today I will be test firing 7.0 gr of HS-6 with 158 gr LSWC. It is not a good case fill though, so I am using the Powder Cop die until my Lock Out die comes back from RCBS with a new spring.

Now that I am better acclimated to recoil and forced to use a better grip on my guns, I will probably just go with A2400, sitting on 4 pounds of the stuff.

I have made a bunch of 38spcl using 5.6gr of SR4756 and 125gr plated FP's. Good lite target load, but yeah, not the cleanest stuff. I also used magnum primers. For the 357's I prefer the A2400.

I've been using IMR's SR4756 since the mid 1960's in .38 Special loadings, plus .45 acp, 9x19 and .41 Magnum, all with cast bullets. It's an excellent powder for these calibers, however Hodgdon is going to discontinue it in 2015, as sales weren't enough to justify continuing it. I have about half a 12 pound keg of it left.

There is ample data in the manuals for SR4756, so you'll have plenty of choices to choose from.

Hope this helps.

IMR's last manual I have (april 2004) list for the 158 LSWC 7.7 grns of 4756 at 35,800 cup for 1110 on a 6" 357 magnum. This is to 1.580 col.

I would cross check that with something else but I think it is close.

I shoot a lot of 38 Super (smaller case 130 grn bullet) and use about that as my standard load so it can't be too out of the ball park. As a 38/44 shooter that is a bit high for my standard 158 LSWC load in a shorter case than the 357 Magnum, so I would argue 7.7 grns in a 357 magnum is a pretty mild load.

Just picked up 2 lbs. of it. I also heard its going to tb discontinued. i use it in light .357 & 30-30 lead loads for a rifle with no problem. Lyman shows plenty of loads with it.
