Hodgdon list's the max at 45.9 grains, compressed load. Sierra list's the max at 43.4 grains, my Lee 2nd Edition tops out at 42.5 for a 165 grain. I'm loading 43.5 grains, am I asking for trouble here? Its 2.5 grains off the Hodgdon max.

from hodgdon.com:

165 gr. Hdy sp imr imr 4064 .308" 2.750" 42.0 2554 47,700 psi 46.3c 2767 59,700 psi
168 gr. Sie hpbt imr imr 4064 .308" 2.800" 41.5 2518 43,800 psi 45.9c 2766 58,800 psi

I've used 42.5-43.0gr IMR4064 under 168 SMK and 165 SP for years.

What was your starting load? What does you chrono say?

Any pressure signs? Stiff bolt? No? I think your fine.

No problem, especially with Winchester brass. I have loaded 43.6gr of IMR4895 (a faster powder) in Remington brass behind a 175gr SMK (heavier bullet) for a friend's 26" Rem M700, and they clocked at 2650fps. Your load would be quite mild, and I doubt you're getting over 2600 fps.
