Winfield consider prohibiting sale of guns

WINFIELD — The Plan Commission agreed Wednesday night to a joint meeting with the Town Council over a possible ordinance prohibiting gun sales in the town.

The meeting, to be held at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 13, will focus on determining whether guns would be sold at all or in specific areas.

At last month’s meeting, Town Attorney Joe Irak was asked by the commission to draft an ordinance regarding gun sales in response to several complaints that guns were to be sold out of Doubletree West’s golf course clubhouse, owned by David Lasco.

Since then, the question has been how to set up the ordinance.

As of right now, it’s understood by some that an applicant wanting to sell guns must be able to certify that all local ordinances aren’t being violated.

But others would like to see the ordinance already on Winfield’s books bolstered.

To that end, a committee calling itself Quality of Life and comprised of residents provided its

own list of permitted uses for guns.

“Most people are concerned that retail sales would be a person buying a gun after buying a drink,†said Town Planner Marilyn Dartz as she eyed the group’s proposal.

“The reason we came up with our proposal is because our permitted uses are a half-page,†said Mike Schreiber, with the committee.

“Meanwhile, Crown Point’s had 15 pages, and that made us nervous. If they have that many, there must be a reason for it.â€

The commission will not call a public hearing on the matter, however, until it decides its plan of action.

I had a couple of college professors who graded by weight too. :scrutiny:

This is why I'm moving to a a place with:

No local government
No zoning
No planning commissions
No conditions, covenants or restrictions
No golf course
No lawns
No power
No phones

And a lot of big firearms and dogs to keep it that way.
