new to rifle reloading, waiting on backorder for case headspace gauge for first .223 rounds i loaded as they are too tight in chamber. so i shot some factory ball ammo thru 2 new ars. these empties would then chamber and eject easily from either gun. i reloaded these using only the neck sizing die and trimming to 1.75 with seated oal 2.25 and these chamber and eject easily. however i had a couple of cases where i could push and pull the bullet by hand. after rechecking all rounds for tightness of bullet found 9 rds that were not tight. then used a lee factory crimp on these rds. i realize now i should have kept the brass separate for each rifle. is one rifle allowing the neck to expand beyond .224 diameter of bullet and do these empties then need to be run thru full length resizing die? thanks, joe

Crimp will not fix neck tension. You are correct that if you neck size only the brass should stay with that rifle generally. Lee's neck dies I believe are a collet style and require 20-25 lbs of pressure to complete the sizing process, and this could be the issue. My 2 cents, I am sure you will get much feedback on this, good luck.

thanks mike, yes the collet would move up with each resize stroke and i beleive i did them all equally, was also afraid of bulging case with too much down stroke.

If you are loading for AR-15's, you need to FL size every time.

You can neck-size for bolt actions, but not for semi-auto's.

It seems to me lots of people have lots of trouble using Lee Collet neck sizing dies.
IMO: Not worth the trouble.

Seems to me lots of people have trouble using tools. Most people break good still bits also. Don't blame the tool.

However I agree for the AR they should be FL sized. Turn your FL die in a little farther.

You need to pull those rounds and start over with a properly adjusted FL resizing die. And for more reliable feeding / chambering in auto loading rifles such as AR's, I would recommend you use a small base die, RCBS part# 11131.

I agree, pull those rounds and start over with a full length sizing die. Also like said above, crimping will not solve lack of neck tension. Adjust and use your dies correctly and you won't need to crimp and you won't have rounds which won't fit into the chamber.
