I need to install a Trijicon front night sight onto my G19. I do not have any Loctite around. Glock Inc. told me that fingernail polish would be just as good as Locktite. Anyone have any experience using fingernail polish to secure a front sight or anyone have any comments? THanks

I've used clear finger nail polish to secure the front sight on a Glock 21 that has seen about 2K rounds in the twelve months of use since then and the sight (heinie standard front) has remained snug since. I've also used it to lock the threads on a small screw in the door handle of my storm door. That was three winters ago and this is the front (and primary) door to my home and we use it daily. I just checked it and the screw shows no sign of backing out. I remember that when I used nail polish on front sight scews years ago that it stayed put but allowed me to easily remove the screw when the time came.

Home Depot and other home improvement/hardware stores sell red and blue loctite. I recommend the red loctite for sight screws and blue for scope rings. But if you've got clear nail polish lying around, it will work. Just let it cure (overnight is best) before use and check it for loosenses just as you would with loctite. You want to drive the screw to hand tightness only - do not strain or try to crank it and overtighten, which wil strip the head and the threads.

I'd suggest that you keep calling Glock, Inc. until you talk with someone who advises you to use red (271) Loctite on that front sight screw thread! ;)

I'm with Dominic on this one. Definitely use Loctite if you have it, but if you don't, don't sweat it.

But if you're in a pinch, nail polish will work. I too have guns using it and it's just fine. Originally, I intended to leave it there for only a short while and later replace it with Loctite. But I still haven't had to do so and it's been at least 5 years.

You guys using fingernail polish on a Glock front sight, or some other brand?? Just for future reference, you can buy replacement front sights from both Brownell's and Ameriglo.

Glocks are like women, they both demand high end nail polish :p har har har..

On a serious note, you can find red loctite at any hardware store, auto parts place, some gas stations, hobby stores, and many other places. Nail polish might work, but I much rather use something thats ment for metal. Trust me, there is a diffrence between nail polish, and loctite. Nail polish just fills the gaps between the threads, so vibration wont shake the screw around, thus making it back out. Thread lock will bond to the metal on the screw, and the hole. Its a much stronger hold.. Do it right, get loctite.

I just used fingernail polish on mine. It's held on for over a year and a few hundred rounds.

Lowes, Home Depot, etc. has red Loctite. It is also good to have the right size driver for the nut that holds the post (3/16" hex). Also, make sure your barrel re-installs and won't bind on the nut. If it does you will have to stone down the head of the nut. For this reason you might want to do a "dry" install first before locking it down.

Edmond: You could get the same results from cat sperm. :D Get back to us after a few thousand rounds!

If you decide to chase down a tom cat and extract the aforedescribed "stickum", how about posting a video? :D
