Here is some pic's of how I do it, maybe help some noobies do their own. Most of you older guy's probably have your own method. I use masking tape wrapped around the buttstock first then put a layer of bedding tape over that. The bedding tape is tough and can take some sanding or grinding before it wears through. With pad installed ( I use Hi-Viz X-Coil pads) I have an aluminum plate mounted in lathe, with stick-on 60 grit disc, the 60 grit will not get the stock hot when flattning the end where the pad goes. Some stock finishes will wrinkle up when they get hot (like Rem.) I can grind the pad down easily because I can look down from the top and follow the stock contour. When I get it ground down to the black tape, I remove it and use an orbital sander using 220 grit disc to finish sanding it down to the masking tape. The X-coil ( brownells.com) grinds better than any I've used, they are very soft and don't roll up in little balls or get gummy like some others do.
