I knew I had some of these old 20 gauge shells around, and as I have been shooting more skeet lately I have been going through my stock of bags and buckets of old shells for reloading. Thought I would share these for those who have never seen this color of 20 gauge shells. :D

I have between 75 and 100 of the old red AA's. I can't recall when they stopped making red ones and required them ll to be yellow so they weren't mistaken for 12 gauge shells and dropped down a 12 gauge barrel by mistake. Early to mid 70's maybe.? Some of the older members here should know for sure,

Federal introduced purple 16 ga and yellow 20 ga in 1960.

The other companies followed soon after.

Be careful.... be very, very careful....

Down this road is the collector's pit of despair....

The ammo collector!

Shoot them now and don't look back - don't say you weren't warned.

Todd.

Winchester introduced the compression formed plastic hull in 1964 and the AA target loads with plastic wads in 1965. So red 20 gauge Winchester shotshells were probably made into the late 1960s.

Wow time passes quickly. I wouldn't consider ANY plastic shotgun shell to be old. I remember the old paper ones. (I used to shoot lots of them). I remember seeing some really old high brass paper shells that I thought were pre 1920. I am sure that somewhere people have them in collections. I gave my brother my old 410. He still has a box of purple paper 410 shells that I bought for it in 1965.

Yes plastic hulls have been around longer than most shotgunners realize.

Remington introduced plastic body shotshells in 1960!

Actually those are reloads, I've been going through my buckets and bags of empty hulls. Loaded close to 1400 20 gauge shells and still have a half of 5 gallon bucket left, ran out of wads last night. Next I'll start on 12's, got a couple of trash bags full of AA's, and found a 5 gallon bucket full of 28 gauge hulls that will be next if I can keep enough shot and powder on hand.
