Interesting things about crime and campus (U Cincy)

This is the time line I've found regarding gun crime and the University of Cincinnati, it's students, and a few blocks off of campus in about 1/2 an hour. The 6 of 2007 I can't remember the exact date.

12/11/07 Student robbed at gunpoint and ordered on ground blocks away from campus and police patrol
11/30/07 Student shot in leg
9/27/07 2 Students robbed at gunpoint in Corryville
6 of 2007 Shots fired on Calhoun dorm porch
4/10/07 Student robbed in parking garage at gunpoint - later determined bb gun
11/20/06 News Record publishes assault in campus green
4/21/05 News Record Poll shows 74% don't feel safe on campus
4/20/05 News Record publishes student shot in stomach



Now, let's take a look at the crime figures according to UCPD. Keep in mind that the 2007 stats are only good till Oct 2007 while the 2006 rates are the complete year.

Total-41 incident drop in Part 1 crime, complete 2006 data to 1/07-10/07 data.

Now, taking the numbers from 2006, dividing by 12, and then multiplying by 10 we have this (same positions for the years). The 2007 Number hasn't been altered, as it is for 10 months.

Total-35.9 incident gain in Part 1 crime, 10 month 2006 average to 1/07-10/07 data.

Keep in mind that they're telling us crime is going DOWN. Well, it is if you leave out over a month of data for 2007 - which is the latest they have on their website.

Cincinnati PD District 5 had 457 part 1's in 2005, 485 in 2006, and 401 to the end of October in 2007. Raw numbers, there was a gain of 28 more from 05 to 06, and a drop of 84 from 06 to 07. If you do a 10 month average on 2006, you now have 404 part 1's, only 3 more than 2007's 10 month tally.


So, in short, crime is really just as bad as it was last year, if not worse. The frequency of gun related violent crime is increasing both on campus, and around campus (affecting students). License holders still can NOT carry on college campuses.

I'm still dumbfounded by the politicians and administrations.

Thanks for the info, I've been concidering the University of Cincinnatti for law school next fall. I'll definatly be taking the safety of the neighborhood into the equation now.

I am not conversant with the details, but a lot of people claim that campus crime statistics are unreliable. The specific claim is than crimes on (dunno about near) campus tend to be grossly underreported.

Universities are notorious for covering up crime on campus. The easiest way this is done is the use of Incident reports in lieu of uniform criminal complaints.

Incident reports are (supposed to be) used for for non-criminal activity, like suspicious people, situations, disturbance that don't reach the criminal level. Even things like broken lights, gas leaks,etc. are reported as incidents.

However, they're also a great way to conceal real criminal activity. The campus cops can make a "report" and bury it. Since the "report" isn't a uniform criminal complaint it isn't reported to the FBI for statistics.

I know of one woman who was raped on campus while a student. She reported it to the campus police who wrote up a report at the hospital. When she later followed up on her case the "report" was lost, including all the information from the hospital.

Her criminal complaint was later found in the school's Physical Department's maintenance files! Apparently all "incident reports" ended up on file with the maintenance men.

Whenever a crime occurs on campus, no matter how petty it may seem, you should insist upon reporting it to the local police as well as the university police. This will reduce the likelihood of much needed data from becoming buried.

University police serve at the pleasure of school administrators, not the general public.

Armed (pun intended) with the knowledge you gleaned in a mere 30 minutes you should begin a campaign to end your school's weapons ban. Start by circulating this poster. When - not if, but when - there is another mass shooting at another "gun-free zone" your credibility will be cemented.

I have a daughter who went to grad school at UC and who now works in Cincinnati. She has an apartment off of Clifton Ave North of campus. Although the area is filled with liberals, the crime rate seems low.

I'm the campus leader for Students for Concealed Carry on Campus at the University of Cincinnati, as well as one of their organizers on the national level.

Once I get my computer back tomorrow, I'll be working on finishing an article to media outlets about crime on campus, as well as forwarding them to my state reps. Here in Ohio, you have to change state law to carry on campus, it's currently a felony. I'll then be finishing up the bylaws to create a shooting sports club on campus to introduce more students to this and the shooting sports in general.

It's heartening to read of this movement. College campuses are such fertile grounds for opening young minds, the problem is that so much conventional wisdom about gun control is waiting to fill them with puke. Arguments in favor of Second Amendment rights require thought and introspection, not the emotional heartstrings that gun control advocates play upon. What better place to accomplish this than in your sphere of influence. Thank you for your efforts.
