Is flying the only way to travel with a gun?

It looks like both Amtrak and Greyhound prohibit firearms of ANY type in both carry on and checked luggage.

Doesn't ANYONE ride Amtrak to go hunting?

Is flying the only option? No ground public transportation?

Anyone have info on EITHER handgun or long gun travel accomodations?

Never traveled AMTRAK, so I can't comment there. I have taken intercity Bonanza busses, and I will tell you that I have never seen bags get cheched (never seen anybody with anything other than a duffel, roll lugage, or back pack).

I've never had Amtrak baggage x-rayed, metal-detected, or otherwise inspected in any way.

If you're very concerned, call ahead and ask.

If you're feeling moderately daring, put the gun in the checked bag. If you're feeling really daring, put it in your carryon bag on the train. (Unloaded, of course.)

I'm not a lawyer, nor am I suggesting you actually do these things.

flying does but it is hit or miss. Some people have been severly hassled or had major hang ups by an employee or security who doesn't know the rules.

Frankly I'd say if you have the time and the money drive wherever you are going. No hassles, no problem, no luggage getting lost, etc.

If not print out the rules, pack everything at or above what they require, and be ready to deal with a potential major headache.

Traveling on amtrack does not generally involve baggage searches. Everything is a carry-on. Also, there are no "checked bags" in my experiece.

you buy your ticket, you go up to the platform, the train shows up, you get on with all your baggage, find a seat and a place to keep your bags, the guy comes around checking your tickets

trains are low-security because you can't hijack a train and drive it anywhere the tracks don't go

I imagine they will continue to be low-security until someone boards an amtrak in Upstate NY with a suitcase nuke and detonates it 4 hours later underneath Penn Station

People still actually use Amtrak? Wow...

I tried to take a trip using the train last year, just to see what it was like.

It's almost impossible to get anywhere you would want to go, and the prices are ridiculous.

One more Federally funded idea that needs to go.

I took a Greyhound bus once and at one stop it picked up ex-convicts just released from a maximum security state prison. I wouldn't have known it either if I didn't happen to overhear the conversation in the seat behind me.
If you have a concealed weapons permit, you may want to carry a gun.

I heard that Greyhound utilized metal detectors some times, but everyone I talked to said they had no problems. I need to go from Memphis to Nashville and I am worried to try to carry on the bus.

heypete, "Of course unloaded" is for those who don't have a carry permit. If you do have a carry permit load her up and your good to go.

Amtrak's policy is "NO guns, not even checked and locked in your car on Auto-Train."
