I've been reading some posts here and elsewhere and a number of people are speculating that Glock may be ready to come out with an update, a Gen 4.5 model if you will, or possibly an entirely new gen in a Gen 5. I'm possibly a few weeks away from getting a Gen 4 Glock and if there's a possibility that we're less than a year away from updated Glock models, I don't want to buy a Gen 4. The finger grooves are fine, but I don't like the slide finish and have been hearing that it wears quickly.

So, should I wait until later this year and deprive myself of Glock shooting fun or should I grab one before You Know Who is elected and causes the great gun panic of 2016?

Well, do you need a block today? If not, wait. Your not going to loose out by waiting.

Glock is coming out with an updated model of pistols within the next year to year and a half?

0-0.1%

I would say its doubtful.. Gen4 was only to fix existing issues with previous gen 40SW guns.
Seems squared away for now as are the issues with the early G4 9mm's. I wouldnt look for a new gen anytime soon. As there is not much they can change unless they bin their current lineup, for something totally different. Given their history, that is NOT going to happen!

Yep for the FBI

Glock won the RFP the FBI issued for equipping agents with a new handgun. No details (as far as I know) have been released yet. They may not be making a new model. Here is the last article I have seen about it.

http://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2016/06/29/breaking-fbi-selects-glock-next-service-handgun/

from the article:
Although Glock is known to be the winner of the FBI’s contract, it is not known exactly which model, if any currently available, actually was selected, beyond that it will be in 9mm. In 2014, the FBI announced it would abandon the .40 S&W caliber and re-adopt the 110-year old 9x19mm Parabellum round, citing the almost identical practical terminal effect of the two rounds and a higher possible magazine capacity with the 9mm.

As for the OP's question, personally I would buy one now. Panic prices are ridiculous and that is if you can find the item you want in stock.

Referring to Post 9, there are other agencies which may buy from the currently awarded contract. From Amendment 1, section C.7:

"In addition to the FBI, the following U.S. Government entities may purchase pistols and/or parts under the contract:

United States Department of State, Bureau of Diplomatic Security
United States Marshals Service
Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms
United States Postal Service
United States Treasury Department Drug Enforcement Agency
United States Capitol Police
United States Park Police
United States Department of Energy
Office of Inspector General (all Federal agencies)
United States Department of Defense.

Periodic adjustments may be made to the authorized buyer list throughout the life of the contract. Authorization will be provided on a case by case basis and require advance written approval by the FBI Contracting Officer.

All orders shall be prioritized in the order they are received.
Emergency orders placed by the FBI, as identified by CO or COR, shall receive priority over all other orders under this contract."

I'm not a Glock expert, by any stretch of the imagination. That said, I have a few comments. In answer to your last question, I'd say go ahead and guy something now. That way, you have it. If Glock comes out with a new Gen and you just have to have it, you can always sell the one you bought. It's not like used Glocks are going to suddenly become unpopular. Unless you live under a rock in the middle of nowhere, someone will buy it if you want to sell it. As for not wanting to buy a Gen 4, . . . buy a Gen 3. AFAIK, they're still making them and they're still available. I like Gen 4, but there are plenty of folks that prefer Gen 3 to 4.

I'm not saying I don't want to buy a Gen 4, I was just saying if an updated model of Glock is set to hit soon I want to hold off on buying. Also, since it's a G35 I want and have been reading that Gen 4 Glocks are supposed to work better with .40 S&W, I'm not getting anything other than a Gen 4.

So, from all the input I've gotten, I guess I'll be getting on ordering that soon.

If they do decide to sell FBI groovless guns to the public. And I don't know why they wouldn't.
I can't imagine why they would change the slide finish. I am no expert but the slide finish seems pretty tough to me.

I just hope they keep the groovy line up for us groove lovers.

And while they are playing with plastic, I still want a G26 in raspberry.
Are you listening Glock?

A G26 in raspberry? Didn't you hear, Glock is going to team up with SCCY.:p
Is there a color in existence that they haven't come up with yet for the CXP-1/CXP-2?

The one thing that you might also want to consider is that if there is a new model launch sometime in the near future, do you really want to be one of the first to own it. If it's just a few minor cosmetic changes, no big deal. But if it's going to be an extensive new model makeover, you might want to wait until all the "bugs" get worked out of it.

I'd say buy the Gen.4 G35 now and be happy.

You're absolutely right. Anything new takes time to get feedback on and for the manufacturers and their employees to make as good as it possibly can be.

Alright, Gen 4 it is. After all, I do like that dual recoil spring.

Nah, they're not doing the Tennifer finish now. I have Tennifer and post-Tennifer Glocks. The latter is definitely thinner-looking and will show some wearing, particularly in polymer holsters. So you get some high edge wear and fading toward the muzzle end of the slide. It's a Glock. Who cares? It's not some beautifully blued revolver or nice 1911. They're just tools- ones that are very efficient and remain so despite showing some age.
