I've got a couple of nice folders that I carry but I'm looking for a decent edc/beater for around $20 or less. Fixed or folder isn't too important. Maybe a 3-4" blade. I'm going to mostly use it for practicing my sharpening anyway. Any suggestions?

Run down to Walmart and pick up a Gerber LST(3.5") or LST Jr. (2.75"). The LST Jr. usually goes for around $14. My Jr. has been my beater/EDC knife for about 4 years. The blade does not hold an edge very well compared to some of the Spydercos and the like, but its easy to put a hair-poppin' edge on it in no time. Its as durable as you can get for a $14 knife. I use the handle to open non-twist off bottle tops and the blade for everything from letter opener to cutting the gas tank fill tube out of my brother-in-laws 1965 Chevy Panel Delivery.:D It's a low-buck workhorse.

It is much easier to practice sharpening on a carbon steel blade as opposed to a stainless one. So I would get a cheap Schrade folder that has a carbon blade or a Cold Steel Bushman as previously mentioned.

The kershaw vapor from walmart is a excellent beater knife choice for sharpening or carry. Its not carrieried at walmart, but the kabar dozer collaborations can be found for 15-20 and are a awesome deal. I gave three out as presents this year, and may have created two minor knife nuts in the process. Decent steel, lockback knife that has some excellent ergonomics.

I second the nomination for the Ka-Bar Dozier series. I have a folding Hunter and honestly it's the best 15 bucks I've ever spent on a knife. There are much, much better knives out there, but you'll have to shell out quite a bit to get them :). It's a good beater knife, which is what you are after.

i like my smith and wesson knife.

i got mine for 20 brand new at a gun show

The absolute best knives out there for less than $20 are the Frosts of Sweden fixed blades. NOT FROST OF PAKISTAN!!! All of the Scandinavian knives in that price range are excellent.
