Its not been above freezing here since a week before Christmas . This morning on the way to work it was -18c. The weather forecast for Wednesday talks of above freezing and rain and then -5 on Thursday. That might make for interesting road conditions.
There have been record numbers of road accidents this year with moose and roe deer. I know the roe are finding it hard this winter as they have been around my pheasant feeders that are behind the house and the dog kennels.
Must be that Global warming;)

If it helps any, it's even colder here in Minnesota. I'm afraid the winterkill of deer and pheasants will be bad. Grouse do well in deep snow. For many years I've hunted pheasants in Northern Iowa but this may be my last year. The price of nonres. lic is nuts, and the weather so bad this year. The last time I went there were birds in the open but even with snowshoes I could not get to any bird cover and the birds in the open were out of range before I could stop the truck. Right now the roads here are closed. No travel
allowed at all, it's too dangerous for the snowplows. At times you can't even see the road. If I could find my motorhome I'd head South.

Skoghund, where are you at to be feeding pheasants and hitting moose?

It seems like the last 3 years have been bad for animals in Eastern Iowa. This year does seem to be worse though. I'm worried about the years to come.

Tim the Student, I'm in Sweden. I put out 100 pheasants every year . A mate and i work spaniels so its good for training and we have a couple of pheasant days. Its not a common form of hunting in this part of Sweden.
We have mainly forest and 5 years ago we had a big storm that blew down
10s of thousands hktrs so with the regrowth the moose population is increaseing dramatically.
Sweden has the tightest population in the world. we shoot about 90,000-100,0000 moose every year and 80% are shot in the first week of the hunting season. Most are hunted with dogs. After the 1st October we hunt nearly everything with dogs.

Picture from 2 weeks ago of the moose calf that we had left to hunt

Rembrandt where are you located? I am just north of creston and looking for a good range in the area to do some practice to 100-150yds. Anyone know of anywhere in the area that has a good range. Got a new Savage MKII BV gotta get sighted in and put some lead down range.

Live in Ames, but have farm land between Greenfield & Winterset. Not aware of any public shooting facilities in that area.

The is a nice range just North of Indianola as well. Rifle and pistol ranges.

Skoghund, pic of the dog brought up an old memory, my uncle used to raise dogs that looked like that, saidly never needed a pup when he had them.
This year was the first time we lost branches outa trees because of the weight of the frost, it built for over three days and by the third the Russian Elms were losing branches when there was no wind.

Here in PA the snow storms hit us bad, even my huskies took a few days to get used to the deep snow. Tomorrow night we are looking for 6-12 more inches, on top of 24 inches that just fell a few days ago, then possibly another storm in a week or less.
Heck the wild cats here are miserable, they have to plow their way through the snow to hunt.
