There it is. My October 1942 production Springfield M1 Garand. It's truly love at first sight. It's a CMP special grade, so it has new wood and barrel, but most everything else is USGI. I also got a spam can of HXP surplus ammo to burn through. I can't wait to tear it apart, put it together, then sling some big 30-06 slugs

Now that is one beautiful rifle if I do say so myself. I really like the walnut stock, not to mention the attributes of such a fine war relic. Be sure and give us a range report.

Very nice CMP rifle. I'll never forget many years ago shooting my first Garand, a friends, and when the en-bloc clip ejected I thought the rifle had flew apart. I enjoy shooting my Garands more than any other rifle. Have fun. Remember to use grease to lubricate the Garand at designated spots.

Yay, allow me to be among those to congratulate you on the auspicious occasion. See, good things come to those who wait. Seriously, enjoy your new rifle. They are fun to shoot, especially if any of your local gun clubs host service rifle matches. Enjoy! :)

I can't wait to get to shoot it, but I think it'll have to wait a week or more. First, I don't have any 30cal cleaning supplies because it came so dang fast, and because of work. I don't know about Service Rifle Matches around Hazard, that's more likely a Lexington area type of thing if I had to guess, but I will look into it. I'll also have to look up what it is really, never read about them.

A lot of clubs with high-power ranges offer clinics to get you started. A lot of them will even loan you a rifle for the clinic and you buy the ammo from them. I did one of these years ago and it was very fun and educational. I was shooting small-bore at the time and it was definitely fun to stretch out and shot at some distant targets.

Congrats on the Garand. I hope to join that club one day. It will have to wait for now however.

You just missed the Eastern CMP Games in NC. Now you can practice for next year.

Thanks everybody! I really like it and can't wait to shoot it. ReloadRon, other than my 10/22, this is my only firearm that has wood, so what's the point of the tung oil or linseed oil?

To protect the stock. Wood has a grain and the idea is to fill the grain. Just a matter of protection. That and a nice look.

USGI RIFLE STOCKS AND HAND GUARDS: WALNUT AND BIRCH

ENTRY LEVEL CARE AND PRESERVATION TIPS AND CONSIDERATIONS FOR CMP WOOD

The above link has some good material going back to our friends at the CMP. A well oiled (finished) stock will resist moisture getting into the wood grain. Also, you want to bring out the nice deep color of the walnut, like a fine piece of furniture. :)
