At a recent gun show in NY, I saw an interesting piece. It was labeled a 1929 Ithaca double, internal hammers, 12ga, 18.5" barrels. It had initials carved lightly in the stock, but otherwise the stock was pretty nice. The receiver had "Ithaca Gun Company" engraved on it. The guy wanted $695, came down to $650, but didn't come across as being serious as he didn't want to stand up and talk. I continued walking.

I kind of liked that gun, and would have given it a better home. What do you guys think of that shotgun? I don't have an Ithaca and would like to add a decent one to my collection. Thanks.

Thanks for the listing. The gun I saw at the show was not Damascus barrels. And it looked like it was a police department issue. It didn't look cut down. But it could have been. If it was it was done right.

One way to tell if its cut down is to look closely at the end of the barrels. Look for a filler there as the barrels start out apart and come together. Firing pin end has more distance/gap then forend. If its odd filler, its been cut. I have a SxS Ithaca from 1911 that are not damascus. It works great. When I was hunting for a SxS I took 2 12 ga snap caps to test triggers. Found many that had one trigger that fired both. Not a factory option there. Will need gunsmithwork if thats what happens. Some peeps won't let you even try them with snap caps, walk away from them. Just my 2 cents. Bob

I'd Pass on it. Unless he could prove it to be original or come significantly off the asking price. But for that era, it sounds to short to have not been altered. In 1929 long barrels and tight chokes were the most common configuration.
