It's time my little girl started going shooting with her daddy, carrying her OWN gun. :cool:

I'd love to get her a chipmunk, but she's left handed and I can't find one for a lefty. I don't want to confuse her with learning lefty techniques on a right hand rifle, but can't find anything of which meets my criteria of single shot, bolt action, chipmunk sized, .22 lr. Any help out there?

Check with CZ. They are making the 452 in a LH action and my son's 452 "Scout" is a sweet little (Chipmunk-sized) rifle. Comes with a single-shot loader that can be substituted with a magazine when the time comes.

Enjoy, and good luck! :)

I didn't realize that CZ made a gun that small - I'll deffinately check out the Scout. I hear lots of good about them!

fwiw my daughter is ambidextrous, and i didn't know what to get her... finally decided on a break action for her starter gun, and went w/ a nef youth 22... might at least look at it.

Yorec, I need to clarify one point: my son's Scout is a RH action and I've only seen these guns in RH. But, as the Scout is based on the 452 and the 452 is coming out in LH, they may release a LH Scout. If its not in the plans, calls may help them add it to the roadmap.

Failing that, the break action guns are a great idea, as are lever guns.

I'm pretty stuck on a bolt gun and will still check into the Scout. She doesn't have the hand strength to operate a NEF and if I wanted an ambidestrious repeater like a lever gun, I'd prefer a pump.

Thanks guys.

FWIW, I shoot rifles left handed and most of my shooting with bolt actions has been with RH rifles. I now have a left handed bolt action deer rifle. No confusion here.

While I started out on a single shot bolt action .22, I never was stuck on any one kind. First shotgun I ever fired was a H&R 20guage when I was 7. It never seemed like it took so much hand strength as compared to anything else, but I always found that when I was a kid, anything I picked up took getting used to. Strengthening the hands may be part of that process. Also, a kid can start out with their parents preferences and develope their own. My Daddy left the door open for me and my sister to pick what we liked. My sister likes two guns, and those two only, while I like a wide variety. Everybody's different. Frankly, I can't understand anybody who can't handle or don't like a levergun. IMO, you can't beat a Winchester 9422 for quality and workmanship in a .22; it's a beautiful rifle and real accurate in my experience. However, that's nothing against the pump- my great grandfather had Winchester Model 62, IIRC, and he and my Grandpa would sit down and strike matches with it. My experience, though, says the pump, unless it's somewhat worn, won't be anywhere near as smooth as a 9422. The 9422 won't take as much effort to operate or require as long a reach for a small kid.

I was taught on a .22 chipmunk, right handed bolt, it's actually sitting in my gun safe right now waiting for the day I ever have a kid... Hope it's far far in the future lol. But I now primarily shoot a yugo M48, right handed with no problem.

Yorec;

FWIW, whether or not she's left-handed really doesn't mean much. The thing to determine is which is her master eye. It's a good bet that she will be left master eyed, but certainly not a sure thing. I'm left-left, however my daughter is right handed, left master eyed.

The Savage MKII youth could quite likely fill your needs. I've got the full size, & it's certainly a worthy gun. As I understand it, either the short-pull youth, or adult stock is available from Savage as an accessory. Me, I'd look into buying the youth gun & cutting the stock to whatever's needed. Then purchase the youth stock as she grows, & do the same, if necessary, with the adult stock.
