I've got about $1,500 burning a hole in my pocket ... I'm looking for a battle-ready rifle. I'm looking for suggestions. Preferred caliber ... .223? Won't be used for hunting ... just SHTF self defense and target shooting. Where do I start?

5 AK-47s :evil:
I'd second the M1A but if you want a .223 that won't work. Aside from the obvious sea of ARs, how much are those FN FS2000 going for?

There are 223 AKs, but the mags and spare parts are not as plentiful and more $$.

For 223, if you must, AR15 is the best platform, a 16" barrel, flat top, flat gas block, collapsable stock, is the route to go. Bushmaster is a great flavor, Rock River Arms is nice as well. Several good makers, DPMS, Stag. I would steer clear of Olympic, though some would say they are fine.

You could build, but I only suggest that if you already have a quality rifle for SHTF, other wise you may find yourself with an incomplete rifle when the turd gets to the fan.

I would suggest that you consider the M1a Standard. It will give you more utility, less specialized, quality rifle able to reach out to 500-600 yards and be effective when it gets there. FALs are my second choice, and are nearly as capable.

Mags and ammo, mags and ammo, mags and ammo, mags and ammo.......and one last thing, MAGS AND AMMO.

AR mags= $10 FAL mags= $10 M1a mags= $24

Ammo= good luck!

+1

For the M1A. Just because you will enjoy it.

If you want to put some of that 1500 into goodies for the weapon, go with a nice RRA AR or something similar like a Colt.

Get a quality CAR 15(RRA, BM, Stag, DPMS, ect.), some flavor of optics, and spend the rest on as many 30 rd mags as you can....and ammo of course.

Saiga .223. Either buy from Tromix or have it sent to Tromix for an update.

spend the rest on Ammo and Galil mags.
