I am interested in upgrading my current pocket gun from an old Smith & Wesson Model 38 Airweight Bodyguard to one of the newer Centennial Airweights (Model 442 or 642). One of my primary reasons for doing so is to have a gun better capable of withstanding +P ammunition. My recollection is that the 442 and 642 were not rated for +P when they were first introduced in the early 90s, but were upgraded at some point in the mid to late 90s to allow unrestricted use of +P ammo. I believe this was a “dash-number†model upgrade.
I want to buy a used 442 or 642 without the integral lock. Can anyone tell me what the “dash-numbers†on the upgraded 442s and 642s are? Are the barrels on the upgraded guns marked “.38 Spl. +P†to indicate that they are now rated for +P loads? Are there any other features/distinguishing characteristics of the later +P rated models?
Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks!
