I have a JC Higgins model 50 in 270 and would love to get rid of the trigger that it has now and replace it with one that is shooter friendly. What are some good triggers out there? I have heard of Timmney but thats about it. It's an FN Mauser action so I'm not certain what to use. I would also like a new stock, will any stock for a 98 Mauser work? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.:)

I have a J. C Higgins Model 50 in 30-06. The trigger was heavy and unadjustable.

I installed a Timney, was able to get a lighter, about 3 pound pull without any problems. I am using the rifle safety, so I got the Timney without a sear blocking safety. I think a three pound trigger is as light as I want to go on a hunting rifle.

This has been at least ten years, but I do not recall having to remove any wood in the stock for trigger installation.

The original stock is very light. The rifle recoils hard and I installed a rubber buttpad to reduce the felt recoil. I also had to install a 03 stock bolt behind the recoil lug to prevent a stock crack from getting larger.

I do not recall if this action will fit in a standard M98 stock. It should, but I would have to disassemble the thing and try that to find out. Those FN actions would take a M98 bolt, cause I tried that.

If you notice, this rifle is much lighter than 1980's and later rifles. This rifle was built just after WWII and the typical buyer was an ex Dog Face who carried a 9 lb Garand all day in the war. This was forty years before 4 wheeler's, so you had to walk to your hunting location. Ex Dog Faces were no longer interested in hauling heavy iron all day, so the market gave them light rifles.

Use a Timney trigger for an FN Mauser. The original is attached to the trigger guard. Get rid of it. The Timney attaches to the receiver. A stock for a Model 98 Mauser will fit fine. Get one for a commercial Mauser without the thumb cut.

I too have a J.C.Higgins in a .30-338 with a Timney trigger I installed-the rifle was a .30-06. Great trigger and superb accuracies with stock barrel along with some bedding with Marine-Tex.

I am enterested in the three parts of this trigger

THe three parts being the
1 trigger (out of the trigger gaurd)

2 the sear off the frame

And

3 the tube out of the stock where the rear gaurd screw goes.

PM me when you are doing the trigger exchange
