JSP penetrative performance

It will have nowhere near the velocity necessary to expand. It will penetrate much like an FMJ, but with much greater deflection if it hits bone. Penetration in ballistics gelatin will be roughly 27". You'd be better off with an FMJ compared to that. Speer 135 gr Short Barrel Gold Dots would be even better. The 125 gr standard Gold Dots are good through 3" and 4" guns, too.

It's just that the above load tends to shoot very accurately in my revolver. I can assure myself of COM (heart and lung) hits at 12 yards even when under acute stress. Hence, expansion is not an issue for me so as long as the JSP load can penetrate thick clothing and go deep enough to inflict damage to stop two-legged predators.

Would a +P version packing 245 ft/lbs of energy be able to penetrate bone?

Let me guess, you're from a state that bans hollowpoint or "hollownose" ammo. I'd go with JSP if that was the case for me. Do some soaked newspaper tests with the ammo fired out of YOUR gun. Don't rely on a report off the internet.

Wet newspapers are too hard. Try poking a stack of wet newspapers really hard. Ow. Now poke a person.

Shoot into about 8 gallon milk-tipe jugs full of water in a row if you really want to test expansion, but it isn't going to happen. JSPs or FMJs are fine for defense, but I'd still suggest a flatnosed FMJ with the same velocity and accuracy. The problem is the soft lead getting smooshed, not the velocity.
