Well it took almost 2 years to buy one, but now I finally have one of these newly manufactured No.4 based 7.62x39 carbines.

I won't be able to go to the range until Sunday unfortunately, so I have no idea as to how it will perform. However the reports to the gun store owner have been quite favourable apparently.

As to the workmanship? Well from what I know these rifles are partly made in Vietnam and the U.S. and overall the workmanship is pretty good.

I'm actually surprised that these rifles only sell for Aus$895. Rem700 ADL rifles sell for around Aus$1000 and Steyr Scout's sell for $2300. So its defiantely good value for a 'general purpose' rifle.

Obviously the market for a box mag fed 7.62x39 Enfield Carbine wouldn't be that immense in the U.S. ( due to the availabilty of Ak's and SKS's ), but it definately has generated alot of interest here in Australia.

A couple of bonus points to this rifle is that it came with a picatinny rail as standard and it takes SKS mags.

Although I was only dry firing, having never used an Enfield before, and utilising the middle finger trigger pull trick, I must say - damn that action is fast!

That sounds pretty interesting. I'd buy one, even with the availability of AKs and SKS here. Rechambering to 7.62x39mm eliminates the only weak point of the Enfield, which to me is the rimmed cartridge. You lose ballistics, but gain a rimless round in a lightning-fast action and the ability to burn up all that cheap 7.62x39 ammo.

If only you can get a rimless round to reliably eject. I had one in 308, and could never get it to eject properly.

There will at some point be versions in 5.56nato and .308, although I won't be holding my breath for them this time around.

However IMO a 7.62x39 No.4 Carbine would make for a more logical 'trunk gun' than a full sized .303 Enfield. Which seems to be a popular choice from what I read on TFL.

I know what you mean about getting a rimless round to eject right. I have a No7 jungle carbine in .308 that is iffy. One time it will sling the empty across the room, and the next it will barely roll out. I haven't shot it since replacing the extractor spring, but hopefully that helped. It just has to get them out of the action every time.....
Is that too much to ask?

Thats just how my gun acted. One might fly across the room, the next would lay on top of the magazine. I think the problem is the ejector. Its meant for the 303 rimmed cartridge. Even when turned in until the bolt was tight, it still didnt want to throw them out.

No7 Enfields

In case anyone else was confused by the reference to a No7 Jungle Carbine, this would be the No7 Jungle Carbine as produced by Gibbs rifle company.

The ejection may be iffy, but the gun is an Ishy :) . Gibbs take the No. 2A Ishapore Enfield rifles, which were chambered in 7.62X51mm NATO, and chops them down to appear somewhat like a No.5 Jungle Carbine.

There are a few forums, and was one really great site dedicated to the Ishapore Enfields. They might have information that would improve the ejection of the rounds. In general the instruction I've been given is to work the bolt aggressively, Enfields like it rough :)

Deadman,

Can we get a pic anytime soon? I'd be interested in getting one in .223 or .308. Are they doing full size rifles?

I've got the same problem with one of my Romanian .22LR Trainers. Although certainly due to a worn extractor, if I work the bolt agressively, it ejects spent shells fine everytime.

I'd post a picture but I don't have a digital camera at the moment....

The gun store owner I bought the 'No.4 Mk10' from had input into the design and manufacture of these rifles, but even he doesn't know when the 5.56mm and .308 versions will be available. Also all three versions ( 7.26x39, 5.56, .308 ) will be carbine sized Enfields with either 16 or 20 inch barrels ( my 20 inch barreled version with a large flash suppressor measures 41 inches ).

My No.7 is a Navy Arms.
I found that the spring arrangement that was in it left alot to be desired. It was a small coil spring that was held in place with a cold rolled pin. I took it out and replaced it with the leaf style extractor spring. It helped, but i don't know if it helped enough.
