hello i'm new to this forum My buddies and i are german reenactors and we just added two nice 98ks to the growing collection wanted to know some more accurate info about them,

the first is a BNZ 4432, it also has a cx with a shield with bnz in the shield on the side of the reciever and a 4 stamped by the sling hole (not th ser. #)..(Steyr-Daimler-puch AG Steyr Austria 1944?)

the second is a DUV 9460 and has some other numbers and letters 20, and a g stamped on the reciever with two smaller eagles with swastikas on the side of the reciver...(berliner luebecker maschinen fabrik, Luebeck plant 1941?)

thanks guys!

Welcome to THR. Where do you reenact at? I'm in Oregon and reenact US 1st Infantry. Sorry I don't have any info for you, but sounds like you have a couple nice ol' rifles.

You are correct on the manufacturers. The serial numbers probably have a following letter, since they only went to 4 digits; 1-9999, 1a-9999a, 1b-9999b and so on. The two key markings are the manufacturer code and the date*, which are (up to the last days) on the top of the receiver ring. The receiver and barrel will carry the full serial number; other parts will usually carry the serial number without the letter as an assembly number. The eagles with numbers are the Waffenamt (WaA) inspector's marks; the larger eagle with the swastika is the final proof/acceptance stamp.

*Some bnz rifles use a single "4" for 1944; this allowed them to use leftover "43" roll stamps by grinding off the "3".
