I just did some trading with the local gun smith and had him order a me a 5" barrel tactical with the new thumb safety. Do any of you have one yet? I am a hardcore 1911 man but wanted more capacity and a light rail and wanted to try a "plastic" pistol.

I have wanted one for a while but was a little afraid of a self defense pistol without a safety. Not because I thought I might shoot my self, but because I read somewhere that something like one out of five cops who got shot in the
1970's were shot with a snatched service pistol. I would not want to be in a scuffle with a pistol anyone can fire just by grabbing it.
If you hand a monkey a Glock, he will shoot it simply because it is shaped like his hand. I have handed plenty of novice shooters my locked and cocked .45 on the range and had to show them how to take the safety off.

I wouldn't have bought an XD before because I like continuity in the controls on my guns, but if I wind up needing another polymer-framed pistol it's back in the running. I do like that they've kept the grip safety.

How many safeties does a XD have?
A Glock style trigger safty, Grip Safty and a additional safty switch on the frame?
Don't get me wrong, but why do American build so many safties in a firearm...
Only 100% working safty is trigger discipline.

Haha! Seriously, it's like some people want to be able to "Safely" play w/ a pistol in their pocket with out it going off...:neener:

I think it's as silly as socks on a rooster, but to each his own. If two safeties aren't enough, the third probably won't be either. Although Tribal did give what I consider to be the first logical reason for buying it.

Except for the redundant safety tab on the trigger, this pistol is set up just like the nearly 100 year old 1911! I think that the real reason for the thumb safety is that Springfield is trying to get the Army contract. Rumor has it that Glock is about to introduce a .45 with a thumb safety also. The original 1911 design was also altered to include the thumb safety in order to meet military requirements.
