I am thinking of puting a scope on an 1858 remmy. Anyone make a brass bodied 2X pistol scope and rings? Second choice would be gloss blued. Looks like the mount would need to be milled. Looking for something that fits the "look" of the 1858.

Thoughts?

The 1858 is question has an R&D .45LC cylinder and shoots the Hornady 230gr XTP .451 bullet with 8.9gr of PowerPistol at about 1000fps. Safe in my gun, but probably not in yours. (yes that is a .45ACP bullet, and yes it is undersized for the bore, and yes it shoots 3.5" at 25y) :what:

Just a fun side project. No real purpose to it. :D

I guess you could, if you wanted to. Not my taste, really, but that's why America is a great place.

My only real concern would be powder residue fouling your optics. I don't know how much of a problem it would be, but I'll be it'll be a real pain to clean if it does occur.

Have fun! If you do it, post some pictures.

Scoped BP pistol

About 20 years ago I put a Blackhawk mount and rings on a ROA. The pistol shot three in one hole and three about an inch out with and without the scope. I did it mostly cause I had to know. Turned out to be an absurd root experiment.

For me the natural shootability and accuracy were not enhanced. It is my theory that this is true for the Colt and Remmy BP pistols also. The reason that the SAA clones (Ruger and FA) gain by scope mounting is the distances that are involved IMHO.

The only BP pistol I would scope again are single shots. For me a TC Scout or Contender.

Traditional pistol scopes are relatively heavy and bulky compared to the new generation of mini red dot sights. This one below is only 3.5 inches long and there's even smaller ones which make mounting them and working to load the gun with it mounted even easier.

A brass, antique looking pistol scope? Consider doing a long term search on eBay and even then who knows if there will ever be any to buy.
