I am going to surprise my husband on Fathers Day with my Grandfather's K98. My mom only has the rifle, no ammo. The rifle is in good condition, my grandfather kept it that way. My Grandfather always said that it was an 8mm. I checked websites and it should be a 7.92. Is that the same as what I found on Winchester's website and some others which they say is an 8mm. Since I have no ammo, I want to give him the rifle with some. I have to buy it local, any mail order would ruin the surprise. Please help me out with this surprise.

Its kinda of confusing but 7.92 = 8mm Mauser. Same thing, they are used interchangeably.

The problem came when I asked an employee at one of our local outdoor stores to help me. When I mentioned what I wanted to, he asked " are you sure it is an 8mm and not a 7mm ". This was someone in there 20's and thought he knew everything about guns. Therefore, I had to be sure. I very much appreciate your help. Thank you very much.

There is a 7mm Mauser....but its something entirely different.

If its a 7.92x57 then its a 8mm Mauser.

If its 7x57 then its a 7mm Mauser
