Kahr P45 story

I was on vacation when we got to the top of some beautiful vista with an ODOT gravel pile. I was looking east and I think I could see about 20-30% of Oregon at once. I was near Shaniko.

I decided the gravel pile and stop was a good place to pull out my new (to me) Kahr P45 and put some rounds in the gravel. I shot the full 7 rounds into the gravel pile, hit slide lock and began to reload. As I changed the orientation of the pistol I noticed the guide rod was sticking out the front. I stopped and field stripped it and found the nail head portion of the guide rod had corkscrewed into the spring about 30-50%.

Any comments, besides whiskey tango foxtrot!?

I undid the mess and used the other end of the guide rod, seeing no real difference from one end to the other, and ran another magazine through it without issue.

Anyone else have this problem. I can't seem to find a Wolff kit, but I best look again as I was looking for magazine springs at the time.

Just sharing. Gun was in failure mode, but kept working. I like that. Never seen this before with any gun. Time to read the manual, but again, I saw no real difference from one end of the spring to the other.

I had a PM 45 (new) that went back to them 4 times before it was completely replaced and then promptly sold/traded.

One of the problems (of many) was the recoil spring has a little nut on the end that unscrewed (it's Loctited). On that repair they sent me a new spring assembly.

Sounds like you need a whole captured spring assembly/

I had this happen on a PM-9 during rds 100 - 200 (not sure when, it still functioned) and Ian from Kahr acted like I did something to loosen it up? Anyway, I got a new one and it is set off-center. Ian wouldn't replace it - told me I could buy a new one.

My point is, make sure you get a good one from them......I had 2 bad ones in a row.

If you bought it new, they should darn well replace it. Even with as many problems I had with both a PM 9 and the PM 45 I found the Customer Service to be good and fast. On my PM 9 they had a change in specifications for the barrel and replace my barrel and spring no charge and mine was working fine at the time.

You can unscrew the nut, degrease it well and put your own Red Loc Tite on it. I even considered peening the end so it cant unscrew.

I had a PM45 that I bought new. I sent it in four times but it never worked right. Always jammed. Kahr told me it was my fault. I had a gun smith look it over. He said it just did not work. I finally traded it off. Other people swear by them. Mine did not work.

The "P" Kahrs and the "PM" kahrs use a different recoil spring system. One doesn't relate to the other.

Were you using the original factory spring and guide rod?

The spring is not ambidexterous. It has a muzzle end and a breech end. You probably had the spring reversed... put in backwards. Nice to hear it still functioned.

I purchased a slightly used all black Kahr P45 that the owner had sent back to the factory because of various problems---funny enough, the thing runs 100% for me and shoots right to point of aim. I like it!

P.S. to my first post... I'd advise you replace the original spring, as it had to deform slightly. They are cheap and Kahr recommends replacement often anyway.

USP9 is right on. I had the same thing happen to my CW45. I put the spring in backwards after cleaning the gun the first or second time I shot it. I took it apart reversed the spring and it has been perfect since.
