My household is moving to Kentucky here in a couple months and I am wondering if we have any members here who can give me a feel for how CCW friendly the state is?

I am looking into the written laws, but I'd also like to hear from residents
as to the state's "feel" about armed folks in daily life.

If it matters any we are going to be in the Hopkinsville area.

Thanks guys

It is about as friendly as it can get. Even more so in a small-ish town like Hopkinsville

yeah, kentucky is a great state for gun owners. I am not familiar with the larger citys and their ordinances but the state itself is wonderful.

As has been said Ky is a very gun friendly state. We are the home of Bud's and Knob Creek. You may or may not see open carry, but it would not alarm most people. Come to Mt. Sterling in the fall for Court days and you will see thousands of guns for sale and hundreds of people walking around with them. It 's a good state in which to live for many reasons not the least of which is the prevailing attitude toward firearms.

Concealed Deadly Weapons permit or open carry. Or if you keep a pistol in the glove box without a permit, your legal.

Wouldn't recommend open carry in Lexington or Louisville some of the local sheep might piss themselves and call the police on you, but still your legal if you desire to open carry.

Gun wise KY is about as friendly as it gets. Tax wise KY is the California of the south, if something can be taxed it will be taxed :barf:

Welcome to KY, hope you enjoy it as much as I do. KY is pretty gun friendly, and it is very easy to get your CCDW (which includes multiple types of weapons, not just handguns).

Kentucky has a very respectable score with the Brady Camp. :D

They also have some interesting CCW laws that apparently allow you to carry darn near anything once you get the permit. Makes me want to move across the river.

What weapons are covered under the CCDW license? Click here for answer

* Any weapon from which a shot, readily capable of producing death or serious physical injury, may be discharged.
* Any knife other than an ordinary pocket knife or hunting knife.
* Billy, nightstick, or club.
* Blackjack or slapjack.
* Nunchaku karate sticks.
* Shiriken or death star.
* Artificial knuckles made from plastic, or other similar hard material.

The state police did leave out one item though: weapon of mass destruction. I guess they didn't want it to get out to the public that that was actually written in the law.

Moving to Hop-Town, does that mean FTCKY?

You will like the area. There is an active trap/skeet club in Hopkinsville and the Land Between the Lakes is good public hunting. There is also a public range at Golden Pond in LBL. That is about 20 minutes west of Hopkinsville.

Gun laws? Only in Lexington and Louisville, the rest of the state is wide open. The public hunting areas do have restrictions (FTCKY, LBL,WMA's), but they are not excessive.

Lexington and Louisville are just like all the other city and county governments in KY. No city or county is allowed to pass any gun control laws or have policies, rules or regulation that regulate guns. All gun control laws in Ky. must be passed by the General Assembly in Frankfort. Cities and counties may prohibit the discharge of firearms within their jurisdictions. I have carried a firearm, both openly and concealed all over Louisville and Lexington for the last 35 years. I have had some interaction with LEO, but they have been few and not for 15 years. It is possible to encounter a LEO that doesn't know the law, but most do.
