Easter Bunny Whipped by Pa. Church Group

Thursday, April 08, 2004

GLASSPORT, Pa. — A church trying to teach about the crucifixion of Jesus performed an Easter show with actors whipping the Easter bunny and breaking eggs, upsetting several parents and young children.

People who attended Saturday's performance at Glassport's memorial stadium quoted performers as saying, "There is no Easter bunny," and described the show as being a demonstration of how Jesus was crucified.

Melissa Salzmann, who brought her 4-year-old son J.T., said the program was inappropriate for young children.

"He was crying and asking me why the bunny was being whipped," Salzmann said.

Patty Bickerton, the youth minister at Glassport Assembly of God (search), said the performance wasn't meant to be offensive. Bickerton portrayed the Easter rabbit and said she tried to act with a tone of irreverence.

"The program was for all ages, not just the kids. We wanted to convey that Easter is not just about the Easter bunny, it is about Jesus Christ," Bickerton said.

Performers broke eggs meant for an Easter egg hunt and also portrayed a drunken man and a self-mutilating woman, said Jennifer Norelli-Burke, another parent who saw the show in Glassport, a community about 10 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.

"It was very disturbing," Norelli-Burke said. "I could not believe what I saw. It wasn't anything I was expecting."

I am sure the children understand.

That is disturbing... other people use a picture of an empty tomb to portray that... or an empty cross...

Whipping the Easter bunny... that really gets across the point of "God is love."

Maybe they should have forced the Easter bunny down to his knees, made him cross his ankles, and then executed him with a double-tap to the head. *That* would really drive the message home to those Godless children!

But isn't Bun Bun the Homicidal Minilop rabbit still the Easter Bunny?

I know he isn't the rest of the holidays anymore since the climactic battle with Mrs. Claus and the elves, but if he's still the Easter Bunny, he'd have used his switchblade on those left standing after he emptied his Glock into them...

I bet there are some British sketch show writers who really wish they had thought of that idea.

Just like the passions movie, kids are not going to understand the symbolism behind any message. They will only understand literal translations of what they're seeing. In this case, the bunny that brings them sweets is being beaten. Way to go. Me thinks a child psychology class is in order for the author of the play.

This is kind of creepy. I am surprised they didn’t have Jesus kicking the EB’s ass.

To quote Tim, "That's one mean-tempered rodent! Look at the bones, man!"

Maybe, maybe not. Either way he's still the only rabbit I know that carries a switch blade and a Glock with a laser sight. :D
