Hello:

Being fairly new to pocket carry, I haven't quite figured out where to shove my pocket knife. I thought about a small fixed blade on my belt, but I'm not sure. I'm right handed and when I carry IWB, I carry my knife in my right pocket. I've had a pocket knife on me since forever, and pocket carry is throwing that off.

Any suggestions or ideas? Do I need pants with more than 4 pockets?

You could always try putting the knife IWB while the gun is in your pocket. I had a folder clipped IWB for a little while and it worked ok, not my favorite but it works.

Cargo Pants

Some time back, I switched from slacks to cargo pants.

My chiropractor was giving me grief about always sitting on my wallet, and what that was doing to my back alignment.

I went to a cargo pants design because I could carry my wallet on my left thigh instead of my left "cheek."

I found that this also made it possible for me to carry other stuff, and more of it. Jury is still out on whether that's a blessing or a curse. :)

I can see the problem with pocket-carry of a small pistol. The small pocket knife I usually carry in that pocket would have to move someplace else.

I came up with a crude-but-effective solution to carrying extra stuff in my right-thigh pocket. Being something of a geek, I suffer from "nature-abhors-an-empty-pocket" syndrome. I wanted to carry a flashlight and an extra knife and a flash "thumb drive" stick, and the pocket certainly had room, but stuff jingled and rattled when I walked. It's fine to be privately uncool, but the rattling walk makes the uncoolness a public matter.

My solution was cheap and . . . inspired?

I got an eight-dollar pair of (white) goatskin gloves at the local sporting goods store, took one glove and turned it completely inside out, then rolled the cuff down to expose the finger "pockets." I can stick a knife or two in it, along with a flashlight and other stuff, and it doesn't rattle or chafe.

No, it's not a custom wallet -- certainly not as nice as the one above -- but I could carry that in a hip pocket if need be, and I'd have easy access to my stuff.

My large folder rides horizontal on belt. I could probably get a smaller pouch for my belt if I wanted to have my small folder somewhere other than a pocket.

Simple solution, of course -- depending one how much junk you have in the opposite pocket -- is to simply move the pocket knife to the other side.

total load in my cargo shorts, 9mm. 2 folders, a scout/utility, small fixed blade, wallet, keys, flashlight, pen, cigs, lighter and skoal.

I would just switch pockets with my pocket knife, but its rather large and the zytel scales got into a lot of fights with my old cell phone. I'm trying to keep my brand spankin' new cell un-chewed. I tried knife in back pocket for awhile but that was worse than sitting on a wallet.

Arfin, that glove is a pretty neat idea. I think I need to go pants shopping. :barf:

I've used my watch pocket to hold my flip-phone, pocket knife, and comb. It's a snug and orderly fit that also allows for my wallet. My other front pocket has an added over-sized watch pocket that holds a slightly modified Nemeses holster. My back pockets are always empty.

Arfin, that was ingenious! I wish I'd thought of that.

I had the same problem with pocket items knocking together. I took an alternate route and made similar setup from a vinyl remnant ((I think? It's from a old chair covering). This may be an option for MrFox if his knife or other items are odd sizes that may not fit in glove fingers.

It's crude, but it works. You can make them to size your own items. Just fold a piece in half over your items, get a fix on where to place the stitches, and just sew vertically in straight lines. A slender, sharp-tip needle is best, helped along with needle-nose pliers. As you can see, you can have variable heights, and my intention was to be able to reach into a pocket and pull out only the item I need, instead of the whole thing.

Mind, what you are seeing is my workplace loadout (restricted zone), so the contents change a bit.

Right front pocket: KelTec 3AT in a DeSantis pocket holster
Left front pocket: MooreMaker 3.5 inch trapper, SAK Classic on a key ring with a pocket flashlight.
IWB, right side: Spyderco Endura

No problem.

Same here.

When I pocket carry a J frame S&W it goes in my left front.(And I am right handed  But I shoot nicely with my left :) )

Since my knife gets used far more than my gun, I have a small fixed in a pocket sheath in my right rear or right cargo pocket. Sometimes on my belt, right hip.

I carry a medium size manual folder tucked into my waistband in front of my hip bone so when I sit the folder lays just above my leg (is "groin carry" the correct terminology?) I never have to worry about it competing with other items in my pocket or nicking up the occasional j-frame and it's right handy when I need it. Don't try this with an auto though...I know from experience.
