hey there
i am starting a load for 30-06 that calls for wlr primers, the only large rifle primers i could find were cci br-2 (match grade) will these be ok to substitute

thanks

What powder are you using and in what caliber?

The regular Winchester large rifle Boxer primer has the reputation of giving more hot gasses and hot particulate, what I call flash, than the Magnum Boxer primer from some other manufacturers, and more flash than any of the other regular primers. More flash generally means more pressure, less flash generally means lower pressures.

More flash is not needed in many applications and might give problems. Benchrest shooters want enough flash to get things going, but no more, as too much flash can cause larger group sometimes. Then again, if the temperature is low and you are using some really hard to ignite powder, you might need the extra flash. Insufficient flash and you can get hangfires or duds.

I use a lot of WC 860, a super slow ball powder, in a 6.5x55 Swedish M96B, and it is the one powder and caliber I have seen that shows much smaller groups with hotter Boxer primers. Winchester used to make a Magnum rifle Boxer primer, and I get much smaller groups with it than the regular WLR.

I don't shoot Benchrest, and the only rifle caliber I believe I have seen better grouping from the mildest Boxer primer, is in the 7.5x55, and the difference did not seem that much.

Unlike with shotgun load data you don't have to match the components in the data exactly. Most name brand primers are fine to substitute as long as you use the right size. For the most part Winchester, CCI, Federal and Remington primers will all do the same good job in your rifle ammo. When loading handgun ammo primer brand is even less important IMO that with rifle ammo. I used to use only CCI rifle primers but over the past 2 years of shortages I've also use Winchester and some Remington too. I loaded my same recipes and could notice no difference in the ammo at all. (none are at the Max so I didn't rework the loads)

Remmag- You are good to go with the BR2s. I don't have any magnum calibers so I don't have to deal with a primer trying to set of a soup can full of gunpowder. Biggest thing I load for is .30-06 and I trickle each load. I does pay off-a Mauser 98 action bought "sporterized in a Bishop stock with unmarked as to maker barrel" shoots 5 Speer 130gr JHPs into .60 groups @ 200 yds!
If I want it to really shoot- CCI BRs rule since 1970!:D
