I just started reloading, only 45 ACP for now, and have been using 230 grain FMJ bullets. I saw 500 rounds of Oregon Trails laser cast lead bullets (230 grain LRN) for only 52 dollars so I bought them. I read in Lee's Modern Reloading 2nd edition that all lead bullets should be lubed.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but do I need to lube these bullets or are they good to go out of the box? What is that little green ring around the bullet if not the lube?

Here is a link to the bullets I bought, and help would be appreciated:

Too bad you weren't reloading a few months back. Cabela's had those same bullets for $52/1000. That didn't last long and I'm mad at myself for only ordering 1000 for the .45 Auto and 1000 for my .38 Special.

Even though those bullets are good to shoot they are a little expensive. You might want to try Mastercast Bullets next time. They are a quality bullet too and the owner, Mike, is a very good person to deal with. The prices on his site are not correct because he's not too good at updating his web site but email him for a price quote. The current prices are only slightly higher. I just ordered 2000 148gr DEWC bullets for $112 including S&H.

Roger's Better Bullets and Bulletworks have good products too.

Awesome replies, thanks, guys.

I will definitely check out Mastercast bullets. Those Oregon Trail bullets were the cheapest I could find, I guess I didn't look hard enough. We shouldn't let the Chinese buy up all the lead and maybe we would end up with cheaper bullets and safer toys.

Mattw, I've also bought from Mike at mastercastbullets.com and he is indeed a great person to deal with. He has been very helpful to me in the times that I have spoken with him.

There is also another place with a similar name (that one is in Illinois) and this other one is in Pennsylvania. They are at mastercast.net/index.html and also have very good prices. I've ordered from them both and have been pleased with the quality and service of both...

Keep an eye on this site he makes some great bullets at a very good price right now he is so swamped with orders had to close his shopping cart for awhile. I use the laser cast to in my .357 there great bullets you want be disappointed.

FieroCDSP,
You're right, Meister Bullets are good but for one problem. They size their 148gr DEWC and 158gr SWC bullets to .357" which I find can cause accuracy problems in some guns. (actually, all of my guns) I would much rather my lead bullets to be sized at .358" but that's not an option for most of their .38 Caliber bullets. (and all of the ones I shoot)

res45,
I have the same problem with Gardners Cache. They also size their .38 Caliber bullets to .357" instead of .358". I have been looking at their gas checked rifle bullets though. Have you ever used them? I'm wondering about their .309" 190gr Spitzer Gas Checked bullets for use in my 30-06.
