Last night's "The Shield" episode

Anyone see "The Shield" last night? One of the sub-plots involved a woman who was being stalked/harassed. She got a handgun for self-protection (and wanted a carry permit, but was of course, denied). Anyhoo, when it came time for her to use it, was she portrayed as responsible? Heck no! She inadvertently shot a cop. What a surprise!

So depressing… Yet another biased story about the perils of civilians taking responsibility for their own protection…

(Yes, it is a show that more than fulfills my raunch quotient for the week, but there are some good storylines...)
 
AFter not missing an episode for three seasons

this is the first psuedo anti-gun bit I may have seen.
Brilliant show otherwise, smelling another Emmy award this year for them...

The chance of that lady accidently shooting a cop would have been a lot lower if Dutch had taken it upon himself to teach her the four rules and take her to a range to practice. Instead he and the other cops were dismissive of the threat to her by whoever was harassing her.

I can't believe some of the stuff these cops get away with. Getting creative in interrogation and accidently blowing the Russian guy up with C4! :what: It is entertaining television, though.
 
That show lost me on the very first episode.

The "hero" cop kills one of his own team because they are all crooked cops and drug dealers really and this guy is going to turn them in to the non-crooked cops; and that's cool?

I am supposed to relate to this guy?

That takes anti-hero to a whole new level.

At least in "Payback" it made some sense.

Gt, the whole point of the show is to display the good and the bad. That most people are not totally evil or always good. Which is true for most in life. I like the show and usually like the character of Mackey, but yes I remember the first episode and it's hard to root for a cop who killed another cop. As far as the interrogations and torturing the bad guys, I like that. :evil:
 
And all over the country liberals watched and said in unison: "See that's what happens when you get a gun for self-defense!"
 
I love The Shield. I watch it at 10. I watch it again at 11. I wake up at 5am to go to work. I watch it again on Sundays. I buy the seasons the first day they come out.

I also agree that its the first bit of anti-ccw crap i've seen. I thought it sad that she even needed HELP obtaining one, and solidified my choice to never live in a state where that would be me.
I lost alot of respect for Dutch recently. Dating another man's ex wife is a big no-no, no matter how much you hate him. Helping people was also usually his priority, which separated him from Vic.

The dichotomy of Vic Mackey is that he uses unscrupulous methods to obtain good results. Reducing gang violence (by arresting all the members of the OTHER gang), catching cop killers (albeit by blowing up a russian), and other oops! make for good television.

I love the show. It's right up there with The Wire contending for my second-favorite cop show of all time (first place will always belong to Homicide.)

Yeah, it broke my heart seeing that. At least he and his crew kept a few for "later on". :evil: :evil:

Personally I would have kept all of them in case we ever get raided my wandering zombies.
 
I watch The Shield and I see it for what it is--fiction.

I wonder about the majority of the viewing audience, though. Lots of people consider the police to be inherently corrupt, and this just gives them ammunition. I love Vic as the anti-hero (look how well he can lie with a straight face and cover his tracks), but he's basically a JBT with the legitimacy of a badge. After last night's episode, Glenn Close deserves an Emmy.

There really aren't alot of "good guys" on the show; almost everyone (except maybe Claudette) looks out for their own interests first. I don't remember once seeing an example of responsible (or even legal) civilian gun ownership. You're either a cop or a criminal if you've got a gun. Guns are repeatedly used as tools of coercion and intimidation.

Dutch was just a prick last night. His condescending lecture that the woman "probably" wasn't in danger (and he's an expert?), followed by her depiction as a hair-trigger loon didn't help.

Oh, and have you noticed how crappy the gun-handling is on this show? In one episode, Vic's running a cleaning brush down the barrel of his gun while it's assembled. From the muzzle-end. :banghead:

Some are. Some don't even wait until the divorce is final, or even filed in court! :what:

I too was turned off after watching the first episode. If I'm gonna watch "good guys" be "bad guys" and visa-versa, I at least want some attractive eye candy and ray guns to go with it. :D
