As I approach 70 years of age, I find myself becoming more and more sensitive to recoil. Even the moderate calibers like the 7-08 beat on me to the point where range sessions these days are limited to about a dozen shots. I have noticed some folks using the Caldwell Lead Sled device with good results. Can any of you folks that have actually used one share your experience, please? Thanks...

I have one and it was definitely worth the cost. I highly recommend them.

I had one back when I was shooting heavier rifles. They have their place but in general if you need one on a regular basis then you should not be firing those rifles in the first place.

I agreed. I got rid of the sled and many of my heavy rifles.

I will concede though, your situation is more unique and the addition of a Lead Sled will definitely enhance your shooting enjoyment.

It works as advertised and can make some of the heaviest rifles very manageable. In your case, since you are not firing very heavy rifles, I would get the smaller one. Then get the small weight bag too and put two large ziplock bags filled with dirt in it unless you have something already such as lead shot.

I think it also has a good place when sighting in new scopes. It takes a lot of the human element out of the equation. I use it every time I sight in a new rifle for the first time, no matter the caliber.

The Caldwell Lead Sled.

I've been using them off and on for quite a while, and until recently I thought they were a pretty good idea when shooting the big boys, such as 7 mag and 300 wm.

But last summer I trashed a Vortex HS-T scope with one. After that incident, I did some research and found that quite a few folks have split stocks, and ruined optics by shooting off of them.

I still shoot from one, but I don't weigh it down to the extent that the rifle can't recoil a reasonable amount. Oh, I was shooting a braked rifle, so I think it was some what associated with reverse recoil, some optics aren't designed to endure that type of punishment, as they lack dual retention springs on the erecta lens, as I understand it.

I have one and love it. I do not strap my rifle down on it. that can change the point of impact when you are not using it. Even when using it without the strap, it is wise to check the POI . I check my POI using sand bags without the lead sled. Just grip the stock as usual.
