So, are there any recommendations for cartridge strorage on my levergun?

I live in a rural area and would like to have 5-10 rounds on the rifle itself, that would allow me to load one round quickly into the chamber, and then have at least one or two full mag loads available. (I'm pretty sure that is 5+1 for the 336.)

I found a few that I like from Allen company and eagle industries, etc, but there's quite a bit of difference in price, and I'm assuming quality.

Leather is an option, but honestly something like the Galco buttstock cuff for $90.00 plus tax and shipping seems a bit pricey.

These, for example, look awesome, but man, $$$:

BTW,I have a tac-lighted XD9 for night-time home defense, and a LCR for EDC/pocket carry, so this is mostly for day-time animal dispatching, if needed, and then eventually for deer and pig hunting. looking for low-profile, tough, but lightweight.

I'd consider something like a culling belt, too, but all the ones I've seen are for larger cartridges like the .375 H&H, 416 rigby, etc, and probably carry quite a few more cartridges than I really need.

Not looking for something like a so-called battle-belt, just something to keep a handful of cartridges and then maybe a few tools if the storage item provides for it.

Yeah, thanks. I've seen his stuff.

Impressive, but it's pricey, and has crazy long lead times. Last I checked, he's backordered till May of 2014

Did I mention that I'm not very patient? haha. :)

that's perfect. buy one of the janky elastic covers with cartridge loops and the leather one. the elastic junk will wear out about the time your leather cover is finished.

There I was, already composing a sermon about quality costing, and good things coming to those who wait, and whatnot, when I read the above. NeuseRvrRat nailed it, I think. lol

hahaha...awesome. :D

Still looking for suggestions...:)... not going to wait till May, and not 100% sure I want leather.

all the elastic and neoprene ones I have had were not worth having, I kept losing cartridges out of them.

when I buy federal ammunition it comes with pretty decent plastic shell holders that hold 10 at a time without letting them jingle or jangle around. Not a perfect solution, but you can always load up one of those and keep it in your back pocket.

Pretty sure my 336 held 6+1, so that would be 17 rounds of centerfire rifle ammo on hand, if it won't die with that, ya better save that last one ;)

Yeah, Federal hunting ammunition came in these nice flexible plastic holders with belt loops.

Also, other ammunition that comes packaged similar could have the plastic holder modified for a belt with little effort.

There is also a good variety of leather looped cartridge belts out there but these plastic holders work fine.

Good idea, and if need be, put a piece of tape over the top from red plastic to red plastic so they don't spill out.

Someone already mentioned Levergun Leather Works. Here what I use, usually only one at a time.

Yep.

Your original post did not say exactly what caliber levergun you are using. My thoughts lead me in the direction of a leather holster style belt around your waist. Doesn't add weight or awkwardness to your levergun and can be very sturdy when pulling rounds out to put in the gun even in a crouched position. I would bet you could find a leather belt that would hold 10-12 rounds or more that already exists in a western wear leather shop. Just take the holster portion off it, or carry a pistol with it in the same caliber!

Thanks Milkmaster, you're right, I neglected to mention that my rifle is a marlin 336 in .30-30.

And yeah, i have to say, starting out i didn't consider something like a cartidge belt or a belt slide but i think thats what i am going to get for a few reasons.

1. I'm a lefty and my wife is right-handed which woukd require removal for either her or I for a proper cheek-weld.
2. This isn't an uber-response, tactical ninja setup :D so grabbing the gun and then putting on a cartridge belt doesn't worry me.
3. As you mentioned the belt would easily pack 10-15 rounds, which is more than i'd likely need for most situations and would allow me to add a belt slide if i'm taking a class and want more rounds handy.
4. Don't want rounds on my sling. Been there done that, and it makes the balance and handling a bit too "wonky" for my tastes...
