LEGAL PROBLEM?

:confused: Now I've trying to get the the bottom of this for a while so if you have already helped you don't have to answer again - Thats where the problem is, It seems know one knows for sure! Some said they did and they were wrong and vice-versa. Here goes I bought "The Complete Glock Reference Guide" and on page 188 they show the Mech Tech carbine model, (That I am not intrested in at all) and below they show a Glock with a barrel that looks to be 18" long. The book said all you have to do is drop it in, beef up your recoil spring, and your good. Now the reason I'm after one is because I have a fully tricked out G17L with a scope and the works. I recently discovered that they make a detachable stock which I want very badly as well and have access to - but I was told that then it would be illegal without the barrel: SBR. I love my Glocks along with all of my firearms and I'm not going to do anything to screw that up. So if anyone has knowledge on this subject please help. I really want this to happen, I know the parts exist- just hard to find. Also If you know of a company that makes there own barrels (18") I'm willing to pay to have one made. One more thing to add- I discovered another method that I believe I understand, basically you have a extended threaded barrel, and with couple extra pieces and a longer barrel you can go that way? Someone please let me know what I have to do to get this done legally. -SMOKES-

So is it legal advice or technical advice. There are rifle stock kits for old colt pistols that are detachable. Are these illegal due to the short barrel too?

I think a visit to the sherrif's department will provide you with the information on legality of your area. If not, they can likely steer you the right direction.

I found this link on the ATF website pertaining to pistols. I have not read it, but it looks like a good place to start. Hope this helps.

You can't put a stock on a Glock if the barrel is less than 16inch and the overall length is less than 26 inches.if you do,you have created an untaxed,unregistered SBR.if you want to create an SBR you must file a Form 1 and a check for $200 to the ATF.And wait for them to give you the ok.Don't buy any parts or put the SBR together until you have rcvd the $200 tax stamp and paperwork.
 
If you do purchase the parts and have them in your posession, even if you have not converted your pistol, you have the "ability" and therefore have broken the law. And it will take the same amount of time to get approved for this as it would if you were to buy a machine gun.

No . . . not unless the parts you screw on to get up to 16" get attached permanently via welding, blind pin, or something like that. Take a look at some of the AR15 clones with 11.5" barrels - they put on a 5.5" flash hider to make legal length, but the flash hider is permanently attached.

Thompson/Center went through this some years ago; IANAL, but IIRC, there was a court decision saying you're good to go if you have only a 16" barrel, or a 16" barrel and a stock, but not if you have only short barrels and a stock.

And if converting, be sure to attach the longer barrel first.
 
I have one of the Impulse Gun Barrels carbine kits for my Steyr M40 (they also make 'em for Glocks).

In order to be legal you have to make sure when you assemble the gun that you put the 16" barrel in FIRST before you attach the stock ... simply assembling the parts in the wrong order is a felony.


That said, its a fun little carbine :)

That is neat...

my wife has an extra M9 Steyr. She since bought an S9 for carry. Gotta look into that.........chris3
