My girlfriends dad died when she was a kid and she got depressed over it, her mom had her put in a mental facility after that which was stupid. So now she's also has to say she's been "committed" to a mental institute with a history of "mental illness" and there are people out there who say depressed people shouldn't have guns. I agree that severely depressed people in risk of killing themselves shouldn't have a gun but she's fine now and I don't really think she ever had a problem in the first place. I think she probably had a normal reaction to a parent dying prematurely, especially in such the way he did.

Anyways... Our state issued her a weapons carry permit. She filled out the form, she had to tell the court what happened and they said she was okay and issued her a Weapons Carry Permit a few weeks later. Anyways. She hasn't bought a gun yet, but if she does, would she get denied because of that? She would have to check yes on the box asking about involuntary commitment. Our state says she's A-okay to go have and carry a gun. But what about the federal NICS check system? Would that be an issue?

We don't know, and we can't know. We don't have enough information about her particular situation, and you shouldn't be talking about it here in public with a bunch of anonymous strangers and everyone else in the world with Internet access.

This is her personal and private business, and if she has legal concerns she needs to be discussing it confidentially with her lawyer.
