I'm rather new to gun ownership. Jist bought a Ruger Single-Six .22lr to do target practice as I haven't shot since boyscouts. Reading around on various sites and looking on a website for a gun range near me got me wondering this question. Is it leagal to buy/own a fully auto matic weapon? The reason I ask is that I'm not to clear on he laws and I know that a high cap-mag law had recently expired and that a gun range near me "rents" fully automatic rifles to shoot in there range.

After surfing the web a bit I came across this and if I'm reading this right it says you can obtain permission to buy automatic firearms from the Justice Department or BATF. If I'm wrong please let me know I'm not looking to buy one just curious because when I got my pemit to purchase a handgun in MN it also said I could get a Assault Weapon. Covers both I guess wich I didn;t know when I applied for the handgun permit.

Any info at all would be appreciated.

Ownership of full-auto weapons is legal IF you first obtain a special permit for it. It's really paying a tax, but the end result is the same ... you have to pay to play.

Don't confuse what the gun control folks like to call "assault weapons" with a true, full-auto military firearm. The much-abused term "assault weapon" (or "assault rifle") normally includes a lot of run-of-the-mill SEMI-automatic rifles equipped with scary stuff like a bayonet lug (when's the last time a Quik Mart was robbed by a guy waving a rifle with a bayonet affixed?), a detachable magazine (sometimes only if said magazine has a capacity greater than 10 rounds, often any detachable magazine), a pistol grip, and/or a flash suppressor.

okay thanks for the info. That was my take after reading the wikepida article I suposse if I was better with legal speak I could find the "law" on a govement page.

State law may preclude the ownership of automatic weapons in some states.

Likely that if there is a range near you that rents them to the public that your state allows them. But state laws are inconsistent if nothing else so you really need to check. Look on the NRA's web site for links to laws in your state.

That is quite a jump from a single six to full auto...

lol No not swiching to full auto just questioning the legality. My next purchase is oging to be a semi-automatic .22LR Probbabky a Walther p22 or a Beretta U22 Neos.

I've like guns since I was in boy scouts and decided since I have my own home now for a few years I can justify buying a gunsafe and storing them at home.
