I thought I would ask. How often do you guys train and do you ever go to training on your own time using your own money? Is this considered tax exempt? I recently have begun to seek training outside of my agency and have recieved some excellent stuff, however, I was wondering how common this is.

Recently went with a group from here to Tiger Valley 2 hour pistol course, it was good clean fun. I am considering going with a partner of mine to Thunder Ranch for the 2 day course since we have based a lot of our "Departmental" pistol training off of their classes. Do any of you guys cross train with other Departments?

Alduro,
According to the tax deductions for peace officers brochure our new chief handed out, unreimbursed training costs are tax deductable. I keep an envelope with the cetificate and all the receipts including gas and ammo for every course I attend. There are a lot of other costs that are tax deductable. Of course you have to have enough to beat the standard deduction.

PM me or e-mail your snail mail and I'll send you a copy of the brochure.

As for cross training, we do some of that. In fact I'm departing in about 30 minutes to conduct some rifle training with the sheriff's dept. tactical team.

It depends.:D I would think it would be easier for a line officer or beat cop, than it was for me. Paid for all of mine. Imagine someone paying their own way--shocking!!!

I was denied a deduction for all my training. Fought it all the way up to the tax court and the supremes. Shot down.:(

Oh, well, would have just blown the extra refunds on women with low standards or bad night vision.:p

I deducted a gun a year for 27 years "for use in conjunction with my official duties", plus ammo, cleaninging gear, holsters, course fees, etc.
