Some things are learned from others, others are learned from experience, thought I would pass this lesson on to others.
Last fall my brother came in to deer hunt, so I loaned him my fave....A 50 beowulf. I figured I would have some fun and just use pistols that day. Loaded up with a G22 and a Blackhawk 44mag. At first light buck comes by at less than 20 ft. Grab the glock and take a good aim, fire one shot to the chest. Deer bucks up and takes off running. I then chase him through the woods with the remaining 14rds in the mag. Thow it off to the side and pick up the 44. Fire off 3 more rounds. Lose sight of the deer, as well as most of my hearing. Holster my weapons and climb out of the tree. Go to where I last saw the deer to look for blood and he is laying about 5 yds from there. In the glock was shooting some off brand 165grain hollow point I bought bulk from Cheaper than dirt. Couldn't wait to see how many holes were in this thing. Went all over the deer, and not counting the holes he was born with, there were only two holes in him, both made by the same bullet. The 40 entered just behind the front shoulder, broke one rib, crossed the chest cavity, broke two ribs and humerous on the exit. Never found the bullet.
Lessons learned....
1. One well executed shot is better than unloading the mag quickly and undiciplined.
My brother thought 18 shots was a little bit extreme. When checking the deer in later, ran into a friend who had been hunting 3 miles away when I opened my barage. He said he figured that was me when he heard the shooting.
