Will someone tell me the differnce between the leupold rifleman VXI &VX2 scopes. I want to know if the difference in price is worth the extra $. I want a 2x7 or 1.5 x 5 or so to go on a 450 marlin. I love my old vari-XIII 6.5x20x50 long range target, 4.5x14x50 and vari-XII 3x9x50. But since this scope Is going on a handi-rifle hot sure if I want to spend the extra money. I expect the same leupold quality and waterproofing. I do not care for the friction adjustments but, could live with it since not a whole lot of adjusting will be needed. I got this rifle in a trade my brother who put a BSA scope on it. Well the BSA is history :neener: after try to zero it with factory and handloaded ammo. This scope dose not have to be a leupold but, I had great luck in the past with them.

Thanks
Joe

Its all in the glass...literally.

Leupold rep at the NRA show told me that the Vari-X series is classed by the QC that each piece of glass goes through...Hell, the Vari-X I is fine by my standards...but some out there prefer the VX-III...WalMart sells the Rifleman series Leupy's...I am not sure about those...but I DO know that they have the same warranty as other Leupold scopes.

I know they are a bit more expensive, but I would recommend a Leupy Compact 2x7x28 VX-II....I think they are 319.00 at Cabela's...might be able to find one cheaper.

the rifleman and vx-1 are very close to the same thing. most of the difference is in the cosmetics, but the vx-1 does have a little better/more lens coating.

the vx-2 is probably the best-buy in scopes right now.

the vx-3 is an excellent scope, but most folks can't see the difference between a 2 and a 3, unless they shoot a lot, and have spent lots of time looking thru scopes.

for the money... leave the rifleman alone. it is so closely priced to the vx-1 that you might as well spring for the vx-1. if you don't mind just a little more, the vx-2 is the way to go, and is the lowest level scope i would put on anything.

the compacts are pretty good scopes, but because of their small size, optical quality does suffer quite a bit. here's the way i'd do it: vx-2, compact, vx-1 in that order. i would not consider the rifleman.

You might want to consider the Bushnell line of scopes. The Trophy line has some nice scopes and good pricing, more bang for the buck in my opinion. The leo's to me are overpriced and you are paying a premium for the name.

But that's just one man's opinion.

Years ago it was explained to me that when they made optical glass it was like a big piece of cheese (about 3' in diameter) and the lenses were cut out of it. The best glass was in the center. The farther out stuff went to the cheaper scopes. My eyes aren't good enough to tell much difference either, but I like the eye relief on the VXIII's and own more of them than any other scope.

Somebody said the Rifleman series was made in China? is this true??

Same scopes, same old technology. The only difference is friction adjustments for VXI vs. click adjustments for the VX2, and slightly better lense coatings for the VX2. While I love Leupies, for the money you spend for their low-end scopes, you can do better with some other brands. Just MHO.

I just bought another VX-I. Its the cheapest scope I will buy that I still have confidence in retaining zero.

I keep trying to like a simmons that I got on a package gun. Every time I get to the range, the POI is 2 inches in a different direction. Its worth $199 to never worry about that again.
