Went to a gun show yesterday and came across a Winchester lever action shotgun, 410 ga. It was priced at $1050. Worth it?

With respect to reliability, is a lever action as reliable as a pump action?

Thanks.

I have always been amazed what these shotguns bring. I really like my 9410, it has been 100% reliable. There is nothing more funny than to here the murmurs of people as you step to the line. People thinking you have a 30 30 and are going to shoot clays. Really impresses them when you start busting birds left and right. I have yet to use if for hunting but it still performs 100% of the time with no feeding/ejection issues.

I'll pick one up, eventually.
I'd likely pickup a lever action 12 ga first.

When they were new, they cost a lot less than that. I think they were in the $600 range. I can't say what its worth to you, but I don't think it will be worth that much to a lot of people.

As someone else mentinoed, Marlin made a similar one and Cabelas was having close outs on them no too long ago. If you'd be happy with the Marlin version, see if a Cabelas still has a new one. They still sow up on the website:

I'm sure there are other sources of used Marlin and Winchester ones. Also, there were a few variants of the Winchester one. One has a fixed choke and another had screw in's (I think the latter was the Ranger version). There were also a few different barrel lengths. So see what features are important to you and which guns meet your wants.

For some reason many sellers-particlarly on the auction sites-are treating these as if they were collectibles. Not in my opinion. It is an OK gun but you can only use the short shells (2.5") in them.
Some folks tout the slugs, but a .410 slug has nothing on a decent 30-30 load, and of corse the rifle will be much more accurate.
IMHO the only reason to have one is so you can have one. Works for me except I will not buy a lever gun with the cross bolt safety, I just resent the concept that after hauling weapons around for the last half century or so some gun company lawyer is going to say that I am not capable of packing a weapon without his input.

I replaced the firing pin in one of the old Marlins for a buddy. Luckily I had a pretty good opportunity to test it.:)
