I just purchased a box of Hornday FTX 45 cal. .452 225 grain bullets. I have cut down some cases. I would like to reload some ammunition similar to the way that Hornady loads. I have a Marlin 1894 Cowboy and a original Ruger Vaquero with the large frame both in 45 Colt. I have the most recent Hornady reloading manual. I have heard from friends that Hornady uses Vihta Vuori powder. I would like to know if anyone on The High Road knows exactly what powder Hornady uses in their Leverevolution ammunition and how many grains?

According to the manual, the powder with any real range of performance is Longshot. The loads in the rifle section show much more flexibility.

The 225 FTX 45 Colt ammo I bought is not accurate in a revolver, according to my gunsmith who tested it in my Vaquero before the throats were opened up for lead. I think that whole FTX concept was developed for rifles, and thus the "lever" theme and odd load data for revolvers. Leverevolution powder loads do not include 45 Colt.

I think the 250 HP XTP is really what you want, with Power Pistol being their pick for accuracy.

In their Leverevolution ammunition they use Leverevolution powder. https://www.hodgdon.com/leverevolution/

I think generally the big manufacturers get a different "grade" of powder, so it may not really be possible to always mimic a factory loading BUT there is no need really as we have enough options to get it done!

Rest assured that the .45Colt 225gr FTX DOES NOT use the same LeverEvolution powder as do the rifle cartridges such as .35Rem, .30/30, .308ME, .338ME, etc.

Also, they wouldn't use VitaVouri, as these imported powders are 2-3x as expensive as domestically produced powders that can be engineered to duplicate the performance parameters of whatever specific need Hornady might specify.

I personally use more LongShot for general pistol use than anything else. I like Win231 and Bullseye for .38spl target loads, but for 9mm, .40,.45Colt, .327FedMag, as well as 20ga shotgun, is the preferred choice. A tad slow for the .45acp, but it'll work.

For the .45 Colt, LongShot delivers all the power and accuracy you can ask for. My "heavy hitter" is the RCBS 270gr SWC over 9.2gr for ~900fps. I've can and have loaded higher, but this load "works".

Hodgdon does not offer load data for the 45 Colt with Leverevolution powder. If they did so for rifle, it wouldn't work in a revolver anyway. I believe that the Leverevolution ammo uses IMR 4227 powder.

Aren't we all speculating here? It seems unlikely to me that Hornady would use a magnum powder like IMR4227 to achieve SAAMI spec pressure levels in 45 Colt.

Each of the rifle leverevolution cartridges use a different blend of powder. The one sold by Hodgdon is the 30-30 formulation according to Hodgdon when I asked them. It us not the same as the powder used in pistol caliber ammo.

I'm fairly sure you will not be able to duplicate the Hornady 45 Colt ammo since they most probably use a custom blended powder like most other factory cartridges. Sorry...

I have come close using HS-6 but not exactly.

Nothing was forbidden, but we are not entitled to our own facts. Kind of what discussion entails.

Unnecessarily confrontational. Your speculation bears no special value. I have given you my understanding of the Leverevolution 45 LC ammunition. You don't have to agree but unsupported "refutation" is worthless and certainly carries no value.

Okay, so what is the basis of your belief that IMR 4227 is the powder used in 45 Colt FTX Leverevolution? Should we just throw things out there and expect it to go unchallenged? I thought my skepticism was appropriately respectful and quite typical of discussion here by everyone. Don't we need to be flexible in order to maintain a sense of community?
