Loads in a 44 Mag Marlin 1894

I have my 44 mag. 1894 Marlin so I get 2.5” groups at 100 yards shooting 23.7 grs of W296 over a jacketed SP Magtech 240 grain bullet. When I shoot a lead 225 gr SWC over 7 grns of Trailboss the gun shoots a small group (4”) but they are about 6-7 inches high and one inch to the right. It would be nice to have an easy shooting, low powered, slow lead load that had the same aim point has the high powered hunting rounds. Does this sound like a normal difference between a high power load and a slow speed lead load? Any recommendations?

The point-of-impact changes you describe are normal. Through experimentation you might find a plinking load that hits near to your full power load at 100 yds. Try different bullet weights and see how that effects POI. Then tweak the powder weight to slow, or increase, muzzle velocity. Work at it and you might get lucky.

I have had some good luck using a Kieth style 225 to 250 grain LSWC (.429 / .430 dia.), over Blue Dot. I use the pistol data and shoot the same round in both, may not be the best but is pleasant in the rifle.

Never put the rifle over the chrono but the pistol rounds were in the 900 fps range depending on bullet. They left the rifle fast enough there was no muzzle rise, before they exited.

To lower the impact with the light loads, continue to reduce the charge. You'll get there.
