I've been on a quest for a new compact .22 to take hiking and as a small game gun when I go big game hunting. I specifically want a bolt action .22 because my collection lacks one (I have plenty of semi-auto and pistol .22's). I've been down the Marlin Papoose road, and it's not for me. I would love a CZ 452 Scout, but I can't find them in stainless anywhere. How are the sights on the CZ Scout? Also, I'd like to keep this around $300 or less...

Many youth .22's fit into my needs, but I want more than a single shot.

What .22's come with the best (accurate and durable) iron sights?

Are there any smaller brands out there I may be overlooking?

Your price point makes it difficult Why stainless anyway?

Savage makes a synthetic/Stainless model that can be equipped with iron sights. IMHO there's aren't inexpensive 22s with decent iron sights from the maker.

I've had rusting problems in the past when staying outdoors with firearms. Some of the rust was in my bore last time which is not protected by blueing/coatings and is the most important surface to protect. Stainless just makes it easy!

Probably the cheapest solution is the Savage Mk II FS, then mount some decent iron sights on it. IIRC, it's drilled and tapped for irons. You can find them for a little over $200, leaving you $100 for a set of sights. The Savage guns have proven to be quite accurate, although their magazines can be very tight and hard to remove.
