Lookn for a decent 9mm 1911.. and wonder whitch brands are the best for you buck, lookn to spend around 400. Any recomendations on what brand or model??

I have an RIA in 45acp, it's about 3-4 years old, It runs good and is accurate. If I didn't like my cz 75b so much I would get one in the 9mm flavor.

If you can swing a higher price tag, the Springfield Armory EMP has a lot to offer.
For the $400 price, I'd look at a Star B or BM. The BM is really nice, but heavy for it's size.

For $400 you're relegated to the RIAs as your only choice. Fortunately they have a good reputation as an inexpensive line. They may not last 5,000 rounds, but few people actually shoot that much.
Gotta ask considering the challenges of bargain 9mm 1911s, why a 9mm 1911 instead of another 9mm?

@hso.... well i own a charter arms u.c. lite 38 spl and i am constantly shooting, ammo is farely cheep but i cannot shoot as much as id like due to the ammo costs lol.. so i have started looking for a 9. And i have always loved the look of a 1911 so i walked into my hunting shop and they have one for sale in 9mm.. i cannot remember the branr name.. its some off the wall company i have never heard of but it looks like a smaller frame 1911.. if that mkes scence.. but i run into problems when i try to buy a handgun since i am only 19 so i have to het my (dont laugh) mom who teaches school and has her conceald carry permit to get them in her name. The 1911 i looked at was 365 i belive i didnt think the price was too high and it seemed like a nice handgun.. they also had a highpoint 9mm which is a great shooting gun.. a little on the heavy side and a little heavy but for 250 its a good price.. i will find out what brand the 1911 is and ask you guys what you think

For that price it sounds like a Star or Llama. Nothing wrong with either if they prove to function well before you ( I mean your mom) buys it.

Check out STI. They make some good guns. The Spartan is a solid gun although it is more than your price range by a little bit.
If you aren't set on a 1911, may I recommend a S&W 5906? They are great 9mm guns and you can find them used for under $400 all day long.

I know its not all machined metal.... but if ammo cost is preventing you from shooting enough to maintain your skill level, a 9mm in a widely distributed long service life platform, with cheap and widely available service parts, might be a better answer.

There's definately a lot of quality to be found in a Rock Island Armory. If you want REALLY cheap shooting in a 1911 platform, check out the ATI GSG .22 1911's that came out recently.

@ spazzy... yea i have found a couple 22 1911s and they are farely cheep but i already have a ruger 10-22 and im kinda tryn to devercify my arsenal lol.... speakin of witch 8mm ammo is it cheap is it even made idk... iv got a 1938 german k98 mauser rifle and i cant find ammo

At that price point, I'll second the Star BM. These have been out of production for many years, but they are still around since lots of them came into the country as surplus Spanish police guns. They are not a 1911 per se, but they certainly look and handle like a 1911, at least for the most part.

Nonsense I'm over 15,000 rounds through my 1911-A2 9mm "widebody" and about the same through my oldest RIA .45ACP 1911 -- I run 'em hot and hard shooting steel plates 200-300 rounds in a session.
Go for the RIA "Tactical" 9mm for only a few dollars more you get the most popular creature comforts -- beavertail, ambi safety, better sights (Novak's), well worth the modest price increase.
RIA skimps on the grips. Plan on upgrading to your favorite.
I used a Star BM until I got the RIA 9mm, as paying $800+ for a gun who's main purpose was to shoot cheaper 9mm ammo didn't make a lot of sense. Main problem with the Star is finding spare mags that work or don't cost an arm & a leg. The Tripple-K are crap.

Brian, for the Mauser, you'll probably have to check some places online. http://jgsales.com,http://aimsurplus.com and http://cheaperthandirt.com are where I buy most of my ammo, and I know they at least used to have 8mm.

That's definitely a drawback for the Star BM. Spare mags are scarce and usually expensive (i.e. $40 or more each). Fortunately, there is a police supply shop near me that often sells in police trade-ins and confiscated guns. They generally toss all the spare mags into bins and sell those separately. I've trolled through the bin enough times to come up with three extra BM mags at good prices.
I laughed out loud at your post and my wife wanted to know what was so funny. Around 1964, my mom bought me my first 1911 form pistol. It was a Llama "Especial" in 45 ACP and I still have it. She bought it at Gibsons Department Store (the"Wal-Mart" of my youth) for $70. I still have the ugly thing and surprisingly enough it shoots very well. It's rough as a corncob (scratches are just part of its character) and it easily shoots everything I can load for it. For such a cheap gun, it chambers SWC boolits like it was designed for them.
I take it out maybe once per year just to help remember what I once thought was such a fine piece. It may not look like much, but I wouldn't sell it at 10x the price paid.
