OK, I'm coming back from BFE soon, and I'll have some money to spend on a new handgun. I'm going to get a 10mm. Why?

1) I want one.

2) I already have a 9mm, 357SIG, .40 S&W, and a .45 ACP in addition to a .357 revolver.

3) I want one.

4) I don't care if you think I shouldn't get one and that I should go with a different caliber, I'm getting one.

5) I want one.

Now that the preliminaries are out of the way, I'm looking for a compact 10mm for carry purposes. All of my weapons are either compact or sub-compact, I'm not interested in a full-size weapon.

That, naturally, leads me to the Glock 29. However, I already have a Glock, and I'm looking for advice on a different make given the above. It may be that the Glock is the way I have to go, I know there are not all that many types or manufacturers of 10mm handguns out there, but perhaps one of you knows of something that I don't.

Thanks in advance.

There are several good 1911's in a 10mm. Other than Glock the only other choice new is the EAA. They get very mixed reports. People who get a good one swear by them. Others swear at them. I know 3 people who bought them and never could get them to feed reliably enough to trust for SD and they became range use only guns. A used Smith 1006 series pistol is another good choice. My personal preferance is either the Glock 20 or 29.

My vote would be for a Glock 29. I have a 29sf on order right now. Just because you already have a Glock doesn't mean you can't get another.

I am also a 10mm afficiando. Here's some observations about getting one:

1. Good luck on finding a 1006 (in any size/slide-barrel length)--but if you can, buy one if you do not want, or are not committed to, 1911 ergonomics.

2. Probably the best value 10mm is the EAA Witness Elite Match. Here is my mini-review. The discussion pretty well covers the pros and cons of EAA handguns--but, I should mention that I think the problems side is a bit overblown.

3. The Kimber ST II I got two years ago has been reliable and accurate. It did need the recommended 500-round break-in, but it has been 2" accurate at 50 yards with the right reload.

4. Dan Wesson is a name that should not be overlooked, either.

5. Personally, I am not an afficiando of Glocks--I blew up an early Glock 20. IMO, it was the polygonal rifling / lead bullets issue, and not an overcharged case. It's my understanding Glock has improved their ramp / chamber issues and maintained reliability--and, in any case, good aftermarket barrels are available.

Finally--if you aren't a reloader, I think you will want to become one if you want to shoot 10mm with any frequency.

I've got an urge to get a 10 for your reason - I want one - and I'd look hard at anything other than a Dan Wesson after having bought one of their pistols in .45.

They're making good tight guns at Dan Wesson and using good parts.

+ on the Elite Match. Love mine.

Were I looking for a 1911 10mm, I would be looking at Dan Wesson.

The 10mm is a great round with the versatility of a .357 Mag in a semi-auto platform.

In my opinion, the Dan Wesson CBOB and the Glock 29 are the top two concealed carry 10mm platforms.

CZ made a lot of improvements to the CBOB after acquiring Dan Wesson and a CBOB recently built by CZ would be my first choice. I'm not into Glocks, but the G29 has so many advantages, I bought one.

I expect this to be my primary carry gun when it comes back home. It's a custom built CBOB like 1911 commander.

This photo shows how compact the G29 is by comparing its size to my S&W 640 .357 Mag snubby. I carry it in a Comp-Tac CTAC and it conceals quite well. The G29 is my travel and woods gun.

Hope you enjoy your new gun.

I know you said you are not terribly interested in the Glock, but I think it is one of the best platforms for the 10mm cartridge. I have had a G20 for some time now and it has been flawless. I use it as my woods gun for backpacking, hiking and camping. Love the caliber, love the gun. It is perhaps the most firepower you can fit in such a small and light package. Not to mention that the Glock platform is very weather resistant. The 10mm is my favorite all-around pistol cartridge of all time.

I didn't mean to give that impression at all. It's just that all of my other weapons are of different makes and I was hoping to continue that trend. This would constitute my first repeat if I were to go with the Glock, so I'm merely being frivolous in looking for something else. I have no issue with the Glock whatsoever.

Have a S&W 1006 and the Dan Wesson Pointman in 10mm and have found the DW very satisfying to shoot. More accurate, better trigger. That said, I would never part with the 1006, just a dependable well-made pistol. If you reload, buy lots of brass, if you practice with any grass around.

I have owned and shot many 10mm's and my absolute favorite was a custom STI 2011. I have hoped that STI would bring back the 2011 in a 6" like the old hunter but with light rail, low and behold they have. This is going to be my next 10 pending funds!

Dan Wesson/CZ Bobtail !!!
You won't be disappointed! The old Smiths are good solid guns, but weigh a ton and would never be confused with a "Compact" pistol!!
