I am looking for a new 9mm auto with the following specs:

Light recoil spring (pref. under 15 lbs.)
Slim grip/interchangeable grips
Reliable .22 LR conversion available
"Compact" size, i.e. 4" or so bbl.
Trigger pull under 8 lbs.
Price under $800 with .22 conversion

This is for my girlfriend, who thought she only liked revolvers until she shot my XDM9 :D I fully intend to let her pick the gun out, I'm just looking for some starting points. It needs to have a light recoil spring because she had trouble racking the slide on all of the auto pistols I have owned (mostly sub compacts or with really stiff springs). A smaller grip and the ability to change grips is a big plus as well. This will be a HD gun, not likely to be carried often.

Here's what I can think of off the top of my head:

Commander-sized 1911 in 9x19 - I've heard that 9mm 1911s generally have a light recoil spring because of the heavy slide, and the trigger is great. Could also put any kind of grips on it, and it's nice and slim.

Browning Hi-Power, for basically the same reasons as above

Beretta 92 - While it is traditional DA/SA, IIRC it was designed as to be easily used by women in the armed forces, and for people with smaller hands.

SIG 226 SAS

S&W M&P 9 - Not sure what the recoil spring weight on these is

Any other suggestions?

I find the idea that the Beretta 92 was designed for women and people with hands smaller than a bear laughable.

If she likes your XD9, why not get her one?

I would look at the CZ P01, Sig P228, BHP and the XD....

The CZ 75B is a big gun with a long reach of pull IMHO. Not suited for smaller hands.

Avoid the SAS it has a DAK trigger which has been discontinued and is hard to master. It is way too long IMHO

She likes the XDM9, but finds the grip too large to be comfortable, even with the smallest insert. Also, it has a very strong recoil spring (20 lb.?) for a full size 9mm.

I will look into the CZ, I've heard lots of good things about them. Just need to find a range that rents one...
