Impact Guns has an accuraized Remington 700PSS package that i'm considering. looking for some opinions. here's the website:

start with a stock 700PSS then:

Modifications performed on the 700P:

Squared and Lapped Lugs, Deburred Bolt
Polished Ejector, Squared Action Face
Polished and Deburred Rails & Feed Ramp
All Holes Retapped on Action
Barrel Set Back 1 Full Turn
Barrel Threads Chased and Rechambered
Polished Chamber
Recrowned
Glass Bedded
Trigger Adjusted to 2.5-3 lbs.

price: $1099.99

i am thinking of having the barrel/action cryo-treated there too before they ship it.

this is just for target shooting, possibly competition in the future.
i want the .223 version with the 1:9 twist. seems like a fairly good deal to me, but i'm new to precision rifles and would like some more educated opinions on this package. thanks for any info or input.

Sounds like a pretty standard accuracy package like most of the better 'smiths offer for about $3-400, so if you can work a deal on a new Remmy, and send it off to a good shop, it might save you a few bucks. Sheese, if you can afford it buy it! Most Remingtons need that stuff done to be really consistent anyway.:what:

This subject has been breached before either here or on TFL, I can't remember...oddly enough over the same Impact Guns package.


But I'll repeat myself...get a regular off the shelf 700 in a modest caliber like the .223, get some good glass, maybe a trigger job...and spend the rest on ammo, range fees, and maybe a trip to one of the shooting schools. It's better to be a Rifleman instead of some Joe Shmoe with a rifle.

The big question here isn't if this is a good deal, but whether or not you can shoot the difference. If you can't or don't know, then you'll be cheating yourself and spending a pretty fair amount to do so.

BTW...price seems pretty ball-park from what I've seen...and my almost out of the box VS is STILL a better shooter than I am...
 
I'd say buy the stock rifle and put 1000 rounds through it before you have anything done to it. By then you'll know what it needs and, more important, what you want, and you won't spend money needlessly.

And get the .308.
 
Check with Norm Chandler at Iron Brigade Armory - he did most of that to my Remington, mounted my Kh scope, and threw it into a glass stock for less then $600. Does real nice work. Can you say "Chandler rifles"?
 
My 700 Police in 223 was pretty dogone good out of the box. Trigger was in the 3, 3.5# range but slightly grittier than I'm used to so I paid a local tuner $35 too drop it down to a little under 3# and no creep and no grit.

Shooting off a bipod on the trunk of a 1980 Monte Carlom I was able to get a few pretty decent groups. I shot a few better groups but I'm not embarrased at these at all and they were shot with Black Hills 75 Gr BTHP ammo so they should be pretty effective quite a ways out there if you're not having wind problems.

Leupold 6-18x40 scope set to 10x. 200 yards. Slight wind. Very cold which didn't help - I think it was the day before Christmas Eve in central Indiana. The lack of consistancy is completely my fault. In other sessions, off bags and a more formal rest, the groups were a little bit smaller but more consistant and more centered if that makes any sense. And as always, I'm far from the best shooter on this board.

Overall, I think that the out of the box guns are pretty darn decent. If you really want to spend another $400 before you ever shoot it, fine. If you have the money and feel you'll benefit from the extra work, then by all means, do it. But I bet you'd be happy with one as it comes from Remington.

Why do all that work on a $20 factory barrel? Wait until you have shot 1000 rounds or so, then send it off to a smith to get a new Krieger, Shillen, etc barrel, and have them tune as you desire.

Go visit SG&Y rifles website, Speedy Gonzales.. He is a damn fine smith and well respected in the BR community. You can get a real smiths price on all the extras, plus he does a very cool spiderweb design on barrels.

You will be WAY better off in the long run..
